300ce-24 -genuine 'amg'

Looks nice, but I'm skeptical. Seen similar go for cheaper. To me it just looks like the dealer has done a quick wheel refurb/paint to spice it up a bit.

Why has it got a 12 valve engine for a start?
Why doesn't the steering wheel match the interior?
Why is it missing the original AMG exhausts?

If it was a Statton demo car, and they did all that work to the interior, surely they would have put a steering wheel that matched on? And surely the demo car would have the AMG engine too? Unless its been ripped out and replaced with the 3.0L.

Still, a nice looking car.

Might be the photo but it looks like those rear wheels have positive camber on them which is a bit odd...

Why has it got a 12 valve engine for a start? Because that's what would have been in the car in 1989 - the reference to 24v in the ad looks like an error
Why doesn't the steering wheel match the interior? The steering wheel is a genuine AMG wheel - I like it
Why is it missing the original AMG exhausts? It's 22 years old, I guess they wore out, broke or were replaced

I might be wrong but I think the early AMGs were tuned/modified versions of the existing engine and all done aftermarket rather than the more recent stand alone factory models.

Its £3.5k and 22 years old I would think its alound to have a few niggles??

Looks pretty good to me. If anyone is serious they surely would go and view / drive / check the details out.

I phoned the garage last week, as I was / am keen. I haven't had a chance to go look yet, as it's so far away from me.

The guy did say that he knew of 2 faults....the air con wasn't working and the rear drivers side window didn't go down.

I'm undecided whether yo travel for 5 hrs to take a look....I could save up some more and buy an SL500 which I quite fancy for the summer. Anyone know of one going?

Doesn't look like an error to me, looks like how ebay would put it in their auto listing from the dvla details, which is what is written on the v5 usually?

My black CE AMG was an '89 (could have been a '90 thinking about it) and had the 24v engine.

Steering wheel, I can see it's an AMG, what I'm saying is it doesn't match the rest of the custom interior, which I'm pretty sure Stratton wouldn't have done. Could be wrong.

Exhaust is obvious and fair enough, but what I'm getting at is for a car to have been the Stratton demo car, being sold as a genuine AMG, it's missing a touch of the provenance that makes it what it is. Just because it's shiney and has the stratton name in my opinion doesn't make it worth £2.8k more than the last black "AMG CE" that was on ebay unless it is complete, which it nearly is. Obviously I'm wrong on that one anyway as it has sold.

Who knows though, whoever bought it could have just got a bargain, it could have the AMG engine, which GP801 you are right, but it was usually/should be well documented, and mainly had the plaque in the bay describing the spec. Regardless a dealer who sell's cars for a living should be able to tell the difference between a 12v and a 24v at a glance.

Intriguing that the car has been de-listed and the engine photo has gone.

Ignore the engine photo bit - I forgot it was in the detailed photo section of the ad.

Looks like a Stratton car to me and I could quite believe it was used as a demonstrator.....the leather interior is similar to my AMG Hammer that was supplied by Strattons and its got all of the period accessories that would come on a Stratton Demo car of that age, ie Aero 1's, Bodykit, Steering Wheel, Leather....the only thing that doesn't strike me as right is the engine cam cover colour, but this could have been done by any owner in the last 20+ years.

Price also strikes me as very sensible for a car with this kit and low mileage.

Re exhausts, if they were anything like the original AMG unit fitted to my Hammer when I first got it, it will have been shot to bits many years ago and not everybody would have kept the exhaust tips.

Re steering wheel....my AMG steering wheel was black like this one and didnt match the colour of the interior.

Re engine.....a lot of Stratton cars just came with the original engine as most of Strattons bread and butter was made selling AMG bodykits, suspension upgrades, exhaust systems etc.....you had to have deep pockets to embark on the AMG engine upgrades

I doubt it's had the engine done as it would have to be a 3.2 if it did
As for the exhaust,I might be wrong but that looks AMG to me

hey,

looks like a "tick the box" AMG order vehicle, if the engine was upgraded by AMG. it should have a stamp on the engine bay...something like this.

the speedometer should have AMG stamped also.

nice looking car

I asked the seller to confirm it was a 24 valve engine. Looks (engine wise) bog standard. Claims to be 231bhp. 231bhp is 1990 24 valve unkatted engine.

Ian:Why did you ask him when you can clearly tell is an M103 12v

rhd strattons cars were indeed avalible with amg on the speedo, mine is also white dials, and definitely genuine.

as has been said before, you could have anything that you could afford back then.

As for the 103 amg modded engine, they are very easy to identify, if you know what to look for.

I have posted details of how numerous times, and if any one ever needs one verifying, i would be willing and able to do so for them, for free.
