4 matic estate

Very tempting.
Lord Walker has probably got a g/box that would fit !!

Not sure about that green interior!

We almost had to 'dispose' of a 4-matic estate on a house repossession recently (the owner came out of the woodwork at the eleventh hour). Put some feelers out and apparently the trade avoid, because of problems with the ... gearbox

Out of curiosity - how much would a 4-Matic box cost to repair as against a normal W124 box????

Probably the same, up to a couple of grand I imagine.

Buy it for £300 , and just don't ever get into a situation where you have to reverse...

A mate had a Vauxhall Chevette like that when we were at school and it saw us all the way through 6th form ..... you really learn to think when you can't use reverse gear......

My little Fiat 126 lost reverse and I drove it for nearly 6 months like that, but then I could open the door and push it back with one foot (while still strapped in) ... so no great hardship!

Bit more serious when the auto box in my 3 litre Granada developed the same problem. The only way to get that to engage reverse was to rev it really hard, then it came in with a bang and the car would wheelspin away backwards at a rate of knots! :D

The transmission might not only include the gearbox. There are a number of other expensive bit between the gearbox and the rear wheels which might need replacing as well. If the car has been driven for sometime with the knackered gear box, it doesn't say much for the car maintenance.

The difference on the 4matic is that they have a transfer box to take the drive to the front axle.
The transfer boxes are notorious for the casing cracking due to the torque.
A new transfer case would definately be more than the car is worth and it will probably break again.

Avoid!!

I wondered who would actually buy such a potential money pit so had a squint at the profile of the "winning" bidder.

Given that he recently managed to sell a 1997 LHD Spanish registered Fiat Cinquecento 500 with 60,000 miles on the clock for £311 I expect to see this one again......

Dieselman...may I ask if you work at an MB dealer or independent workshop ?
I can't think of a past question where you have not known the answer !
