I took the car in for a health check at Wayne Gates today, and was a little concerned to be told that one of the cats may be partially blocked; no EML, and it drives perfectly, but fault code 0472 now comes up with the iCarsoft. Terry states that this is not uncommon on these M272 GDI cars, and a bottle of fuel system cleaner in the tank and a good run often clears it.

Any suggestions for which fuel system cleaner to use?

Are you referring to the Redex / Forte type additives & cleaners?

Apart from this, how's the new car drive?

Yes, something in the Forte/Redex line. .

The car is fine to drive; smooth, quiet, adequate power. It's been looked after in the past, I'd say, and it shows.

I’ve previously used Mannol fuel cleaning additive before, not sure if it actually does anything though.

The trade seems to use Forte a lot; I think I'll go with that. I suspect it may be Snake Oil in most cases, of course, but worth a try, and if the trade uses it it's unlikely to do any harm...

How much to use? Well, I found an American supplier on the net that is quoted at: Add 400 ml of Forté Fuel System Cleaner Advanced to 50-60 liters of gasoline or 10% of the preparation in relation to the amount of gasoline. I think that might be a misprint for 1%... Forte themselves don't specify any concentration. The tank on the car is 66 litres, so I think I'll try adding a bottle to a threequarter-full tank.

Cataclean is another one, that seems to get good reviews. Just to add, I have had good results using Forte myself, on my old Focus ST, it cured rough idle I was getting.

I don't think that Mercedes do, or ever have, approve of any fuel or oil additives. I stand to be corrected though. I'm experimenting with Dipetane at the moment though.....only cuz it was given to me....results will follow.

They don't, but as Cynthia Payne (or was it Mandy Rice-Davies; I forget...) said: "Well, he would say that, wouldn't he?"

The mannol version I used claimed to do many great things including better performance and a quieter engine, I didn’t notice any difference. The amount of 200ml per 66 ltrs was very small so must have been like Alien blood if you spilt some over your bonnet .
