Hi I am fitting new outer CV joints and bearings on 2001 311cdi 4x4 sprinter and am trying to find out how to adjust the slotted nuts that hold the hub onto the CV shaft.
If you have done this job succesfully many miles ago what have you done with your 4x4 hub nuts?
Previously I have adjusted the wheel bearings in the same way as on 2 wheel drive sprinter ie. 0.02 rock at hub face ( more or less by adjusting nut to tight with narrow nosed pliers and then backing of slightly to allow just perceptable movement)
This nut as well as adjusting the wheel bearings also holds the hub onto the CV drive shaft spline.
I bought the new CV's of Ebay and they seem identical except they come with wrong nut (large 6 sided rather than slotted) and rubber boot.
From looking on internet , MB forums etc. WIS I'm finding conflicting instructions ranging from 450NM first tightening then back off 90 degrees... 300NM back of 160 degrees .... 200NM for 312d.... 250NM for 311cd1... adjust to 0.02mm rock at hub face... locking 2nd nut to 200NM after tightening and backing of 1st nut
For the stupidly high torque suggestions I'm going to have to buy 4 pronged socket which I can't find on Ebay (suggestions for vendor.. or do you have one not needed anymore?) and new Nuts (which are recommmended anyway)
thanks Mark

Hi,
I could not find a 4 prong specific socket for the hubs, however would this fit ??

Rear Axle Locking Nut Spanner - Mercedes Benz Sprinter | Part No. 6818 | Part of the Steering & Suspension range from Laser Tools

On my old 5 tonne 508 the rear hubs were held on with a castellated ring, which of course needed a special Mercedes socket. However, I bought a new castelleted ring which was 2 or 3 quid and found an old ex wd 3/4 drive socket of the same external diameter, marked out the castellations on the socket and ground away the excess metal. As I had the castellated ring I could check to make sure it was a perfect fit. Job done, and the special socket was not available even if I wanted to buy it. Probably been £100 at least.

Steve.
