E Class Estate
We have a 2018 E class Estate, with two large dogs, if we leave the dogs in the car while we shop (usually on holiday) with the windows open, and it starts to rain, the windows close automatically, leaving the dogs with no ventilation-which is illegal. How can I keep the windows open, we don't mind the rain getting in, as we're not away that long.

By chance do you also have the sunroof open slightly at the same time?

Have you looked in the handbook? It used to be explained therein, though from memory they closed to a ventilation position, not fully, likewise the sunroof would close and then lift up at the rear to allow ventilation.

I *think* the function cancels if a rising window has a blockage, so you could possibly cover the rain sensor (but some models will also close in extreme outside temperatures or after a set number of hours), or fit something like a cork on top of the side window pane and the system would then detect a blockage.

That’s why I asked ref sunroof as the windows fully close if the sunroof is already tilted to vent.

Have you considered leaving the car unlocked?

We have no sunroof unfortunately.

In that case the windows should only close to a vented position leaving a little gap for air flow. Are you sure they are fully closing?

Will it not lock itself after a certain time ? mine does , I guess there is a way to bypass that . How about activating the 'tow away' button ? Might that work ?

If you unlock it and do not open a door within 30 seconds it will lock itself automatically. If you unlock it and open the door then close it again, it should stay unlocked.

Are the windows left half open, or only a crack open?

If you leave the windows open for more than a crack, you're not making the car any more secure by locking it.

And, I don't know what type of dogs you have, but by the sound of it we're not talking of a breed that can be stolen, or you wouldn't leave them in the car with the windows open?

We have a Labrador and a Newfoundland, so they're big enough for nobody to want to try to steal them. We thought of covering the sensor on the windscreen, but that may blow away, may have to use gaffer tape! We leave the windows about 3 inches open usually, so the dogs get a bit of fresh air.

Thank you everybody for your help, we'll try some ideas.
