After selling my beloved and much-missed CLS500SB last August, two unfortunate months with a V90, then six months in a Stinger, I'm delighted once again to be a wise man following a star.

The DPF and Adblue haters can look away now, because I have to say I am hugely impressed with the engine in my CLS400d 4matic. It is almost spookily quiet, pulls like a train when needed and is returning over 50mpg on motorways.

It may never win my heart like the 4.7 V8 TT in the Shooting Brake, but I am very pleased with it.

Pics below. Feel free to coo and compliment. Feel even freer to keep comments about diesels, DPFs etc entirely to yourself.

Great car, looks tremendous. Basically AMG fast too.

I'd be curious to know what your calculated (i.e. real) mpg is, rather than what the dashboard says - as I have an earlier version of that engine (v6 3 L diesel) and it does about 35-40 mpg depending on environment).

I have an app into which I enter all my fuel payments and mileages, so should have that information before too long. It's displaying 52.8, so may be hitting 50 in reality.

Unfortunately, the car arrived with only half a tank, so I haven't done a full-to-full yet.

Welcome back- what happened with the V90 and what's your thoughts on the Stinger

The V90 was supremely boring, but I could have lived with that. However, by signing up to the forums and Facebook groups I learned of regular failings which were expensive to resolve and which Volvo failed to recognise. One very common example: sunroof seals shrink and water gets into the rear light clusters, blowing them at a cost of £500-£700 to replace.

The Stinger was great fun and I did enjoy driving it. It always felt a little fragile, although I don't believe they are and all the fittings, trim, interior etc felt a bit cheap. Road noise and ride quality were not brilliant either, but I suppose it depends what you're used to.

I thought a stinger was some kind of missile ?

Love the colour

What's the interior like?
Is the 'tech' different to the prior MB?

Pity about the Volvo, as they'd be on my 'look at list' if and when (the V60 hybrid potentially).....

Thank you.

Interior is cream. Lighter than the SB beige but not as light as Porcelain. Also has cream headlining, so it's a very pleasant place to be and not claustrophobic at all.

I think I hit the sweet spot in production history. It has the bonnet power bulges and rear spoiler of the full facelift, but still has Comand with the control wheel and the older style steering wheel with proper metal buttons intead of the four printed plastic spokes and troublesome touchscreen MBUX system.

So wired Android Auto/Carplay and it still has the pretty analogue clock in the centre of the dash!

The later full facelifts were all Night Edition with black on black and extra added blackness. Also, they were hit by the semiconductor shortage, so some missed out on toys. This one is February 2020 production - just in time!

But then I am biased...
