2016 C220d Estate S205 VIN:- WDD205
Engine code OM651

My battery is now 7 years old. Not too sure when it will give up it’s ghost.
I have been looking at replacements and have read that after renewal I need to:
1 Reset time and date
2 Battery needs to be registered in the power management system.

Is this correct?
And, how do I do these two tasks?

My 2016 C250d, bought battery from Tayna.co.uk, replaced original, nothing needed reset or registered, working perfectly ever since.

Thanks for info. Let’s hope that is the case for mine. But I need to be certain. I like to do my own work but over the years I’ve learned to be certain about things like this it could be a very costly mistake.

If your car requires coding after the replacement battery, then I suggest you get it done. Otherwise the car thinks you still have an older battery and it will over charge the new one thus dramatically reducing the lifespan.

Check with the dealer.

This seems the best way to go. Ah well🤷‍♂️

I had my battery changed at Halfords. I wouldn't normally trust them with anything but I thought what could possibly go wrong. Turned out to be a much fiddlier job than I would have anticipated and the small fitting fee saved me a lot of swearing. They reset the BMS for me.

It seems best way to go. But I don’t like MB main dealer prices.
Too ott!
Still I’ll get a quote. Bosch S5A11 stop/start battery is about £185. 20min work. Plus use of specialist IT. (£80) would be just about a fair price. Will see what I get quoted.
By the way, how long would an AGM battery be expected to last. ( mine is 7 years old and 35,000 miles approx..)

Really depends on usage. I had to change mine after 3.5 years because I do about 3000 miles a year and the rest of the time it's sat on the driveway. I think 7 years is pretty good to be honest.

Also, I use a battery “reconditioned” charger [mine is CTek, but pricy but 100% works. I “ look after” 7 cars at moment, and they all have good, but old, batteries.]
You it twice a year on 8 batteries.

OMG. £440.96 to get replaced. If battery costs £200. That’s £240 for max 1 hour work and use of IT.
Someone justify that to me please? 🙏

Doesn't even take an hour to reset the BMS, takes a few seconds.

I think you have been lucky to get 7 years out of it and you are right to replace it . let us know hoe you get on 👍

Pretty much any decent garage could fit and 're set' the battery , just ask them if they have the kit before committing to the job.

Ta!
Just phoning round at moment. Waiting on reply from Independent Merc garage in Ayr. 10 miles away from where I live. They are very good, know their stuff, and are - hopefully- reasonably priced.

Automotive solutions in Ayr have quoted £295.97 for 5 year guarantee on battery and its Bosch. Still pricy but I trust them. So probably will go for that. Thanks to all who got involved. Appreciated!

Do you have any reason to think it's about to die? See below :)

What's your definition of 'old'?

I think you have been lucky to get 7 years out of it and you are right to replace it .

The battery in my Vito is still the original one (16 years old, 150k miles), and our S203 had the original battery when we sold it at 13 years old / 114k miles. Neither had ever seen a charger or conditioner. I have a Ctek but that's only used for tractor / ride-on mower / electric fence batteries / etc.

The battery in my SL is 19 years old now, but that has been kept on a maintenance charger since 2007.

Just don’t want to be caught out. Battery is still functioning well. Perhaps I’m being paranoid?
Nothing worse that looking for a fix when you desperately need the car.
But, you have made me think again. Ta!
