Very confused!! Hope someone can help?
I've been told if a new battery is fitted, it has to be 'coded' to car to allow the alternator to charge at correct output?
Is this genuine, or are they just trying to squeee more money out of me???
Thanx for looking!

They just reset the BMS . It's not coding in as such. Some mercs don't even require it. Some say it relearns itself anyway overtime.

Why are they charging for it . It's part of the change surely.

I think yes to make sure the correct type of battery is recognised as the alternator outputs may differ for a Gel or AGM vs std flooded lead acid batt but that coding process takes 2 minutes

It works on a basis that a dying battery requires more charge than a new battery. If not told, the car still charges at a rate for a dying battery.

Don't bother, I've fitted new batteries to both SLC & C Class, never coded them and they have already outlasted the original batteries without any problems.

hi all. didn't wanna start new tread for battery replacement. I just replaced my battery on 2016 e220d w213 today after original was dying for long time voltage wise checking and mb app notification (went for Varta agm 115, same as oem just no mb sign on it). car started more lively, went for 20min drive and then when came back noticed that mb app still saying battery low, my brake pad warning light just gone (new one here from Mb dealer) wanted to replace them over weekend, and suddenly can't open passenger door neither from outside or inside, pin goes up but is no engagement in mechanism when puling leaver. my 4th merc and starting to hit my self in head for it :wallbash:

Mb app will update in good time . Ignore it for now . 👍

W205 / W222 onward should be done. Earlier design car (such as W204, W212, R172) dont need it done. Better for battery life
It's a procedure done with diagnosis systems in the Front SAM control module.

thx for reply. its w213. battery replacement will be reset next week at my mate garage up in London ( even merc should have self adaptive battery system and recognise it in few days, but it will be done to rule that out). Phoned him today and said ( as of my knowledge since I changed battery possibly but can't say 100% sure) that can't open passenger door, pin goes up at unlocking with key but lever inside and handle outside wouldn't open door, he's words strait away "is a door locking mechanism common fault on those mercs, get a second hand one from ebay £15-30 or from dealer around £150". got one ebay one, when is delivered will book it up to garage(would replace it myself but no clue how to take door trim(card) down with closed door without ripping it on half. and oh btw phoned MB dealer Eastbourne explained fault and what's happening, answer was: is car under warranty; nope; ah ok, we need to investigate and do diagnostic £220 +vat per hour:eek:, do u want me to book u in; my last answer was : good bye🤣

You might find some mercs don't have BMS reset . My e350 on a 17 reg didn't nor has my 18 reg glc 350. The BMS adapts to new battery being fitted anyways ,without a reset .
