I'd like a 2 in 1 laptop tablet thingy and I'm bamboozled by the choice.

So far I've looked at the DELL Insprion 1500 13" 2 in 1 and the Lenovo Yoga 13" & 14".

13" to 14" is about the right size.

I don't want an Apple device as I have nothing else Apple.

Are there any stand out products in this market? It seems the Lenovo rates very highly but it's built of plastic. The Dell draws me too it as it's made of metal.

These things tend to last about 7-8 years for me and only need replacing when they can no longer cope with progression, which is the reason this will be replacing my 7 year old Dell Studio 17" laptop that's now overheating and struggling.

I like Dell, should I buy something else? and does anyone have a discount code for Dell?

This is current favourite, is it a good one?

Is if for general use or is their certain programs you need to run off the machine?

General use, browsing, email.

I put movies on it for flights/travel.

Also run MS Office for spreadsheets mainly, plus a few PDF's.

I'm not an on line gamer.

I've been using such a device for most of this year, I chose a Windows one because it syncs well with my work laptop although I have since found that I can set my Android phone up to do this as well.

I love being able to change between touchscreen and keyboard and it now seems weird not to be able to do the same kind of hybrid way.

A word of warning, on mine the keyboard if quite heavy and I have been picking it up by the screen as you would with a tablet. The result is several cracks in the glass, it still works but it's unsightly and will probably end it's life sooner rather than later.

On the plus side the 8 to 12 hour battery life on 50% screen brightness is pretty smart!

Which one do you have?

Funny thing is i have a top spec laptop and my wife as a cheap laptop and guess what one seems to be the better machine? Yep its the cheap model, so don't worry to much about spec as long as it does what you want it for I would opt for a cheaper model from here on. So a lesson learned for me on laptops.

My advice dont go there I did and I've gone back , had a Microsoft Surface pro which was an absolute piece of junk made me far less productive work wise, it just could handle the applications I was running on it. Now Gone to a Dell Ultrabook with touch screen and I am a happy bunny again does all my work stuff and films etc with ease.

I don't like the surface pro at all, it's a tablet with a floppy keyboard.

What I'm looking at is effectively like an ultrabook but folds right back over.

I would look for a laptop that has a really good battery over most other things.
I would hate to be out after carrying it around a having very little battery left.

Here a another that worth considering if they do what you need.

Asus ZenBook UX305CA

I have a few different ones and by far the best are the ones that are laptops with detachable screens rather than Tablets with attachable keyboards if you will use it as much with the keyboard as without.

The best one I have is the HP Spectre X2 which is an Intel i5 with 8Gb RAM and a 1080 13" screen.

You need 4Gb RAM as a minimum. I have a 2Gb HP Envy X2 (Atom Processor) which does struggle and a 4Gb HP Pavilion X2 which is better and copes with most things pretty well.

I also have a chinese tablet with keyboard and its really best used as a tablet.

Hi
I have been using Lenova yoga 13 for 3 years now,no issues even with 2 young kids hammering at it.
Lenova is much cheaper in the states.(may be excuse for a trip).

Sorry for bringing out an old thread but I'm about to buy a new laptop for travelling. I work abroad and need a full functioning Windows 10 laptop that I can also watch films on, use to take handwritten notes and will be robust. Thinking latest gen i7, 16gb and 512gb sad minimum. Happily pay up to £2k so I'm not wanting a cheap. Product. Currently looking at a either of two Lenovos X1 Yoga or the Yoga 910 that's just starting to come out. Both generally available in the US but I don't want to run the risk of import duties. Did look at the latest HP x360 but user reviews seem sketchy

Ideas??

I ended up buying the Dell and have been running it nearly 6 months and I'm delighted with it.

My business partner bought the latest model MS Surface Pro and he can't get on with it at all, he is an Apple disciple though so I'm not sure of the Surface pro is junk or if it's just "not Apple".

I went with i7, 16gb Ram and a 512mb SSD and it's fast, well built and easy to use and was circa £800. I'm not sure what extra the next £1200 would get you.

The latest Surface Pro 4 tablets are very good and probably best in class of that type of tablet with keyboard, but it is a very different beast to a convertible.

I have used convertibles for a number of years, I will probably switch to a Surface Pro next as I want something more mobile than a convertible.

However if you are just looking for a more flexible laptop and want that solid feel keyboard then a convertible is a better choice.

For the fold-able type (rather than separating) then either HP or Lenovo are the market leaders and the ones to look at. At the higher end the HP ones are better where as their lower end are not as robust and the Lenovo ones are better there. Dell are worth considering also.

Superb shout Red, thanks. Do they all have 'pens/styluses'?

I'm usually a Dell basher as their design and quality is often behind Lenovo. But this looks ok. A bit bland but ok.

The extra cash I guess is on slimmer, lighter, higher end designs, better screens (QHD or 4K) and materials (alloy build and B&O speakers.

Looked at a few reviews and the HP keep winning. I started out wanting a Lenovo but I'm stuck on getting an i7 (latest gen if possible) 16gb and that leaves either the Dell at circa £800 or a HP X360 at double that. It it really double the machine??

No stylus with the one I have, I'm not sure if it's an option but it's something I just don't use and would probably lose. It is set up with pen and touch support so I guess it's just something you could add if you wanted.

The important bits of the the Dell (the hinges) are metal. Overall I find it pretty slim and compact.

I tend to use it as a laptop with touchscreen added on, I don't often use it folded right over as a table unless I've got it stood up in tent mode watching a movie.

I'm not a techy user, so I'm probably not the right person to ask about performance but it works for me and it charges pretty quickly when plugged in.

The SSD fires up very quickly compared to HDD computers.

I have the Inspiron 13 5000 2in1 as linked to at the beginning of this thread I bundled in MS office and it still came in under £800.

I have used a Yoga 2 for a couple of years for work. Great machine. By far the best screen / keyboard that i've ever tried which to me is the most important items on a laptop.

I'm torn...

- Yoga still looks good, I love that hinge and overall design. Even fancy an orange one
- HP is a stunning piece of kit but I cannot find stock of the right spec. The Kaby lake versions seem to be thin on the ground in the UK. Edit: latest version does not support Pens?!? WTF??
- Dell on paper looks good but from personal experience I've just not liked them. Sorry Red.
- MS surface book looks lovely but the spec I would want it's over £2k which it's mental.

Going to head to Currys tomorrow to see if I can physically touch some of these and make a decision. Fun fun!! [emoji1303]
