i need to buy a 4x4 for practical purposes

i dont really have much experience in this market so am looking for advice on my fave motoring forum
i guess the Ml will be out of range(more to do with costs rather than purchasing i suspect )

initial thoughts are hyundai santa fe or perhaps an older toyota surf

requirements are
sub 5k
decent mpg
low running costs
reliablity

over to you guys

What type of use would the car need to manage? Muddy lanes, wet grass fields?

Hello

How serious do you need to off road? do you need to tow anything big?

If serious your looking at a Landy :) or defender?

Any larger ML size 'car' will struggle to do 30mpg really and running costs at this level will be quite a bit for a £5k car.

I think you would be better with a Rav 4 type size car? x trial, freelander, Honda CRV etc?

I had a TD4 Sport premium a few years back with a 'power box' and it did 35 mpg the TD4's were ok for reliability it was the petrol 1.8's that had issues.

its mainly for load lugging and perhaps a small bit of offroad/ towing- but not much
range rover/ amazon would be too much- sportage too little

If you need a larger 4x4 that has decent ability I would go for a diesel Land Cruiser, maybe a Disco but their prone to rot, whatever you do avoid the P38 Range Rover.

What about the smaller Land Cruiser Colarado or whatever it's called? they do a 3 litre TD, are a decent size and are pretty reliable too.

275 miles for a full tank @£36 on a range rover is cheaper to run than my current 407HDi

i think i may look down the lpg road :)

thanks tpwuk for that heads up

I used to run an L322 Rangie, LPG converted and it was fab. I miss it actually.

I was using a company Mitsubishi L200 & Toyota Hi-Lux at the start of the year. Both unbelievably bad on diesel, I couldn't get more than 280 miles from a full tank in the Hi-Lux which cost £110 to fill up. The L200 must have had a slightly smaller tank but range wise still very similar.

Hmm, Sportage was my suggestion. Bloke at work has one and loves it. Did very well in the snow.

There is a known issue with the engines (going pop) in 2003 or older L200s so watch out if you look at those.

I have a friend who has one on a 52 I think and it has been fine having said that.

My father has a Hyundai Tucson. It's no looker, but it comes very well speced and is reasonable economical being a manual 6-sp diesel. With some mud/snow rated tyres it's quite capable at soft-roading. He also rates the local dealer highly.

The OP wanted

low running costs
reliablity

Not sure I would put 5k into an old Ranger on LPG and call that low running costs? too me the old hspe always look erm, a little tired at best now.

I would rather have a newer car, smaller maybe but still good on fuel and you know its going to turn on and work.

auto trader has an lpg Honda CR-V (02) 77k for 4.500ish that fits the brief

and an 05 diesel CR-V that has done 117000 miles for 5k
