Currently I have a 1999 E240 class which I've had for coming up to 8 years.
Looking at a replacement in the form of a C180k / C180 CGI.
Having had a loan C180k SE blue efficiency for a week, I was surprised that the refinement is noticeably less than the above older car.
Due to the construction of the C180k there appears to be more than expected wind or road noise penetrating the cabin, that manifests itself as a mildly irritating hollow and a low frequency rumble that on longer journeys is enough to make me feel a little fatigued from enduring it - not quite like if you've been riding in a small hatchback, but similar. I've driven 150 miles in my other car, a lesser Avensis and stepped out still refreshed. Drove 20 miles in the C180k and felt fatigued.
Perhaps MB wanted this new C to be more of a drivers car and took out the refinement letting the driver feel (and hear) more of the road?
I can only assume the Sport trim with lowered harder suspension and lower profile tyres will not help - but is the variant I'm actually drifting to due to the styling.
Ploughing through reviews no one mentions the road noise affecting refinement. There is also the mummer of the kompressor / supercharger, but I can live with that.
I like everything about it, except the refinement![Crazy  ](/styles/mbclub/smilies/crazy.gif)
Anyone else notice the added 'rawness'? I've driven the previous generation C Class for about a week but in entry diesel form, and despite the slight clatter I didn't appear to notice the lack of refinement..but that was a few years ago.
PS. when C180k steering was turned to full lock, and held, makes a weird humming noise, sounds like an unhealthy steering pump, not sure if it was an issue or a 'characteristic'. Also upon entry into the car (door being opened) there appears to be a temporary faint hum coming from the centre of the dashboard. I thought it might be the fuel pump priming the system - this happened on a VW I had by design. But it almost sounds like the CD spinning in the player, or the ventilation fan, even though the key is NOT inserted. Anyone else notice?
