Hi I am new to here and have a problem with my 2017 C220. It's not under warranty and i have seen its a common problem but I am looking to fine wet and dry it and attempt to respray it. Was wondering if anyone knows if it is easy to remove as i am not a mechanic by any stretch, and I feel it would be easier to spray if not on the car. I think the other option is to get it wrapped but haven't a clue. Thankyou in advance.

I've got the same and I think getting that panel wrapped in gloss black film is the cleanest solution.

I have the same problem. The clear coat is coming away from the plastic panel. A big problem in the USA but one that MB are paying to rectify. It’s a major job as the plastic roof panel has to be cut off and the special mastic that holds it in place cut away. Refitting a new panel involves using a bonding mastic applied in a precise way. I have tried to look up the part no for the panel and can only find it as a part of the whole roof. Breakers are unlikely to have one as it’s virtually impossibly to remove the panel as one piece. On the C Class estates there are fillets between the roof rail and the sliding glass that also delaminate, again the manic mastic holds on to these. I cannot see MB UK footing the bill for replacement or even acknowledging that it’s a problem, they will likely go with the inappropriate cleaning materials used line.
I think our solution is sand and spray. Not sure that I have the skill to do such a prominent area. I may ask a local body shop for a price at some point.

Thank you so much for that, it makes my life a lot easier. I have ordered the primer, the spray colour coded paint and the lacquer and wet and dry fine paper about £40. I will have a go masking it off and try respraying this weekend as it looks like good weather and if I make a mess I will have to sand down again and take to a body shop to be sprayed. I was hoping it was just a couple of screws and hoping it clicked into place but nothings that easy. Thanks again for the info that really explained a lot. Much appreciated.

I hope the respray goes well. Please let the Forum know how you get on. It’s always useful to learn from others when trying to do repairs. Good luck, leats hope the wind and humidity do not hamper your efforts.

I'd say that pretty unacceptable on a 6 year old Mercedes......has anyone looked at getting a goodwill repair in the UK? A car roof that cant be outside for a few years is not really fit for purpose.

Lots of this sort of thing happening to all makes. Lacquered plastic panels are a nightmare. It seems ok if they are painted panels such as bumpers etc. where they are primed and painted but these roof panels seem to just have a clearcoat over the base colour plastic and it won't key as well to the panel. I'looked at a couple of Fiat 500Cs for my aunt (the one with the canvas roof), most of them have a red roof and a red plastic spoiler/brakelight panel on them which is lacquered and they are almost all in a much worse state than the OP's roof panel. For those it's an easy fox though, remove, rub down, repaint, repeat every few years. OP's panel, not so simple it seems sadly.

It's the bodywork equivalent of diamond cut wheels.
Not sure Doodle but rest of bodywork immaculate just this plastic panel between sunroof and windscreen. I have started to wen n dry the panel but rain stopped play.

Totally agree. I have to say that since buying my '03 CLK and joining this forum some of the build quality issues on what I consider to be "new" cars are absolutely astonishing.
