My 2002 Merc (c220 cdi) is showing an EPC warning, it has never had this issue for the years I’ve owned it, just appeared yesterday after it had its MOT. The obvious answer would be go back to the garage but I had a bad experience there anyway and will not be returning.

The warning comes on about 50% of the times I turn it on and the car will either not start (engine turns over but won’t ignite) or will drive and then die while I am driving which is pretty uncomfortable.

I went to Mercedes services who quoted me £200+ /hour for diagnosis let alone actual repair. I want to know is there anything that I can do myself/ any guides people are aware of that I can use to try and identify where the fault is?

The manual just says “have the fuel injection system checked”. I know very little about what goes on under the bonnet but am willing to give it a try, just don’t know where to start.

Thanks.

Further info:
Mileage is 78k
I’ve done about 20k of that and have NEVER had any issue the whole time. Could part of an MOT test have caused this issue?

Does the car fail to start when the engine is hot but restarts when its cooled down?
You may have a failing cranshaft position sensor (cps)
Other thanthat it could be fuel related but needs proper diagnosis.
I'm not familiar with your part of the UK but you really need the services of a Mercedes Specialist to diagnose the issue.
The labour rates should be approx 50% of main dealer rates.
I doubt anything carried out during an MOT test could have caused this.

By the way, its called an EML (engine management light or cel check engine light, not epc which is the electronic parts catalogue)

This is the warning that comes up.

Now that you mention it yes it does seem to work fine from a cold start and has issues when I try to restart, at least from what I can recall. Whenever I leave the house it’s fine, then when I try to return from town I have to wait until it decides to suddenly work again!

I’m in Midlands, they quoted about £220/ hour at my local Mercedes. Will all Mercedes services have the same rate or is it worth shopping around? I imagined they’d all be the same.

I will look into the crankshaft position sensor as a a possible cause.

Thankyou

Not only that though ........EPC" in a Mercedes Benz talk stands for "Electronic Power Control," and when this light appears on the dashboard, it indicates a potential issue with the car's electronic systems, usually related to the engine, throttle body, or other sensors.

Thanks Keith, I’ll give some of these a call see if any have better rates than my local.

Every day's a school day:D
Didn't know that.

Seems the issue has been identified as a fault with the injector system.
Doubt the CPS has anything to do with it then.
Get it to an MB specialist for confirmation.
