New cars unable to do at least 50 miles on electric power may be banned by 2040

The UK's car industry has hit out at the government over unconfirmed reports ministers will target hybrid vehicles as part of a new emissions crackdown.

New cars unable to do at least 50 miles on electric power may be banned by 2040, a ruling that would hit the UK's best-selling hybrid, Toyota's Prius.

The SMMT car trade body said "misleading" government messages were damaging the industry and hitting jobs.

In a short statement, the Department for Transport denied plans for a ban.

No petrol or diesels, 50 plus miles range electrics, how is the massive upgrading of the country's electrical generation and distribution coming along?

Mmmm, don't think'll I'll worry too much ...

My zimmer wont see 50 mile range by then . so i wont worry either.

And of course government decisions made 22 years in advance are cast in stone.....

'Government wants to outlaw personal transport by 2753'. Fanciful thinking making demands that are decades away.

'Free milk for all by 3185'.

In reality, no government can possible plan beyond their term in office. How can you plan to implement a change that starts in a later term? The governments stance on fossil fueled cars is just a useless gesture, because a hell of a lot can happen between now and 2040. I mean, if North Korea takes umbrage at Donald Trumposs, none of us may be here in 2040.

....then by 2040, nobody will build new cars that are unable to do 50 miles on electric power.
