Hi Everyone,
I have just joined this forum in leiu of the fact I am wanting to purchase a 124 Estate and would like the opinion of yourselves as to what is the best vehicle between a 1995 2199cc petrol or a 2998 diesel as I am a little undecided, any views would be greatly appreciated. I intend to keep the vehicle for some considerable time and am looking at reliability, economy, and engine maintenance in particular.
I thank you in advance and will be a contributor to the forum when I get my car as I am on the G Wagen Owners Club and the Camper Owners Club of which I also have vehicles.

Regards

Hi and welcome to the forum. If you do a lot of driving diesel would be best but if not,I`d say the petrol one

Both cars will be slow off the mark but good cruisers. The diesels command a premium for some reason and the 220 is the regraded as the poor relation of the straight six petrols so you are more likely to pick up a E220 bargain. Apart from the coil packs/wiring loom issue the 220 are pretty bullet proof--- All else fails they can be converted relatively easily to LPG-- not an option with the diesel engine. The E220 will also handle a bit more sprightly on the road due to the lighter front end. Drive examples of both to see which you prefer.

I have 300te 4matic and love it. Unfortunately so do most petrol companies. It guzzles petrol, but makes up for it in terms of use and comfort.

They are fantastic cars. Try and get the 7 seat version.

Thank You for the replies people they are much appreciated. I have had a few Mercedes before including a 230 CE and a 230 TE and enjoyed both vehicles so am looking forward to this next car with eager anticipation. I will see what I can get for my budget between these two models as mentioned earlier (220 / 300) and keep you posted with pics and postings. :-)

You will find the 220 twin cam has a lot more oomph than the single cam M102 230 but maximum torque comes in at a bit higher RPM.
