CL500
Hello folks. I recently (last week) bought a lovely used 2002 CL500 that I have been enjoying.

However this morning, the ABS dash light popped up followed by two warnings on the Dash Screen showing faults with the ESP and BAS.

These popped up when I had just started the car, and doing a 3 point turn in the road, setting off for work. It happened when the car was on full lock.

I have had a look around on the net and seen things such as Brake Light Switch, etc. I just wondered if anyone has any advice.

If the answer really is get it into a workshop and on a STAR machine, then any recommendations in the Leeds area would be very welcome.

Many thanks in advance for all your help.

Cant help with an indy in your area, but the ABS warning can sometimes point to a speed sensor fault.
It does need the codes reading to properly diagnose the problem unfortunately.

Thanks chap - this is my first Merc in a few years. do people still go out and buy their own STAR machines these days, or is there a cheaper / better at home versions that are worth picking up?

From memory (about 5 years ago), the STAR systems could be picked up for about £500 on ebay....

Make sure battery is fully charged. Do lock to lock a few times with engine running . could be a sensor or a hub pick up ring at fault.

Hi chap, I've tried this a few times but no luck (lock to lock). Not tried the battery, but can't think it would be low. I think I'm going to buy and iCarsoft i980 or mb ii to help with diagnostics before taking it to an indy garage.

So my MB2 arrived, and seems to have picked up all manner of codes. Some that I think are of note:

B1010 - Voltage supply undervoltage -
could this be as simple as a battery change or charge?
C1504-009 Steering angle sensor is not initialized - is this linked to speed sensitive assistance ? The steering is heavy after pulling away?
C1200 - Stop lamp switch - is this the brake light switch I read so much about?

What would you guys suggest?

1) clear all the codes and hope for the best?
2) get it to an indy for a good look?
3) some DIY work to be done (changing some simple parts?)

Any advice very welcomed!!

If there has been a battery voltage drop, the BAS/ESP message appears as the steering angle
sensor looses its position. This will result in a screen message that says something like
"BAS/ESP Failure Visit Workshop".

There is a simple way to clear this yourself:

Start the car on your parking lot.

Rotate the steering wheel full counter clockwise.

The fully clockwise.

And back.

The message should disappear.

It's probably the brake light switch, given that the part is very cheap. I would replace. As others have indicated, low voltage from a weak battery can also wreak havoc on the electronics and throw these warnings. Have your battery tested and replace if needed.

So, if I get the battery charged, and replace the switch, would I then be good to clear the codes, or will they clear automatically?

Tried that chap but to no avail.

Some of the codes may not re appear, but if they do, clear them and see what comes up when you re start.

Is there any risk in me just clearing the codes anyway, even without replacing the switch, battery etc .. Just to see of it was a minor hiccups?

No, none at all. Any current codes will just re appear. You may clear some stored codes from previous faults.
Just make sure your battery has a full charge. MB's seem very fragile when there is low voltage in the battery.

Any advice on battery chargers??

It would be great if you can reset, Mercedes Benz have a long drive cycle which is a huge pain in the rear.
