I don't want this thread to seem that I am bragging but, I am in the fortunate position to be able to purchase one of the above cars. The AMG is a 09 car, one owner with 26k miles, the Bentley is a 06 one owner with 10k miles, both approx same price. I know they are the antithesis of each other which makes the decision all the more difficult.
I do have other performance cars in which to enjoy when the moment takes me.
However, it would also be nice to have something special for those special outings. I am 73 but still enjoy a bit of motoring fun, I also like to waft along on occasions.
Anyone on here had any experience with either car? What would you do in my situation? Thanks for any replies.

Going by the fact your asking this question on a merc forum you may not get an honest answer. For me there's nothing that would draw me towards the bently when it comes to looks. Very dated, very square looking but all that said still a very desirable car that seems to be holding its money. On this note the re sale value vs the merc would be higher. And the fact you'd be putting mileage on the bentley would be less of a worry that ramping up the miles on the merc. Servicing wise I have no clue when it comes to bently's but I shouldn't think there's a great deal in it.

Performance wise it would 100% be the merc. Just the look of the non aerodynamic shape of that bentley screams single figure mpg's if you had a heavy right foot.

The bentley is a thing of beauty don't get me wrong but like you say they are in a way worlds apart. Either way. If I saw either on the road they would both get equal respect from me. Let's face it! If your in a car like either of these your obviously doing ok. Probably not that helpfull in making your decision but just my view lol.

For sheer power and handling it has to be the Mercedes. (2004 MY car).

For a better review of the Mercedes...

Both would waft very well.

For me the difference is the pillarless coupe construction of the Mercedes. In fine weather driving with all the windows down and the roof open is a positive delight.

Got to be the Bentley - quintessentially British and with all due respect matches your age perfectly.

I would have a brand new one for wafting around in should I hit my Euromillions' numbers :-)

While I don't own a CL65 AMG, I do own and drive daily my CL63 AMG (Bi-Turbo) :thumb: . . its the same car minus the odd cylinder lol.

I have been lucky enough to own some serious metal (Prancing horses, Astons, Blackseries etc) and I have to confess I want to drive this car more than anything else I have owned. ;)

Not only can you drive so effortlessly, the on demand power can catch you out. Being so big and placid one moment, to an screaming volcano (and about the same size), demands some throttle respect.

I love the pillar-less style, the looks and all the modern safety features you would expect from such a car (massage seats, Digital TV for those traffic jams, Night Vision to … er, show off!). That said I have never driven a Bentley, but all I can say from my perspective is that I love my CL and wont be changing it anytime soon. :D

Considering when they built my CL63 AMG, there was only 10 others registered in the UK that same year, makes it a bit more special too. In fact, less than 100 exist in the UK in total. Dare I say it, the CL65 and CL63 is rarer than a Bentley? (I shall have to look it up).
:o

In an ideal world, we could have a car for every occasion. As you have other sporty cars, why not have a car that is an occasion in itself?

Only a Bentley or RR can give that, IMO.

+1 to this

They're both great cars but the Bentley would be my choice given the other cars you have.

Good luck...

I think you have answered you own question really , if you have other performance cars but want a car for special occasions and occasionally like to waft along then it has to be the Bentley (The Bentley will probably hold its value better if that's a concern)

(If you get the CL, I will swap it for my S Class on days you want to waft..........)

Thanks guy's. You all pretty much agree with my thinking, Bentley for special occasions, AMG for fun. my wife says I am to old to be swanning around in the AMG but I do still hanker after one so might as well start at the top. Although I am getting on a bit I still shout at the old fart in front to move over, Mrs P tells me he is prob younger that me, age is all a state of mind. Servicing cost on the Bentley are not too bad, £500 on offer for a standard service but the big one is about 2k ouch!!!. Then, I will only be doing about 3k a year mileage. I too love the style of the Merc I had a CL500 I bought new in 2002 and also love the openness with the windows down and roof open( who needs a convertable?). anyway, lots of decisions to make, seeing that both cars are only 25% of the new cost I think most of the depreciation has long gone. Thanks all for your input I now have to wrestle with my heart over my head. I will let you know how I got on.

The Bentley to me feels more like a car to be chauffeured around in, whereas the CL feels like the car to drive yourself. So I would base the choice on whether you want to use it for chilling in the back seat or behind the wheel :)

Hi Jokuk

I am Just about to sell my 2006 W221 S Class only done 23k from new Cubanite Silver. Fitted with 20K of extras including, AMG wheels and body kit, TV, sunroof, Night vision, HK, distronic, park distance, park assist, phone wiring and cradle, linguatronic, heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, wood leather steering wheel, ABC, reverse camera, dynamic seats, garage door opener, as you can see it's pretty much well speced. What's it worth?

Hi LS, sorry probably not the best person to ask, others may give an opinion or carry out a few searches on autotrader etc and see if there is anything similar out there..but sounds like a lovely car to waft places in ??

I love the idea of a CL65AMG and I would really love one.

However, a small part of me likes the Bentley Turbo Rs and Arnage Ts.

I would go with the Bentley for the sense of occasion.

You could flog some of your other cars and get both!

I will be selling the S class but none of the others. My current fav is the R107 so lovely to drive on a sunny Sunday, very nostalgic, anyone who has one will know what I mean, the Masser for the noise it's sooo seductive, the ML for everyday use but a very fine car in its own right and the R231 SL so fast and smooth and that folding roof. Then there is Mrs. P 's A class shopping trolley good for nipping into town and easy parking.

My choice would be the Bentley, but it is a totally different car. If a comparison and choice were to be made the CL65AMG is much more comparable to a Bentley Continental GT Mulliner or GT Speed. Both two door coupes with almost every conceivable thing you could want in a car, shattering performance, comfort and peerless grand tourers. Sounds like you really want a wafter, and the Arnage will give you that.
