Clampers stand-off with residents

You only have to say "clampers" and I get a vision of a man not-too-dissimilar to the one pictured by the BBC!

I hate to defend clampers, but. I manage some offices in Kent. Other tenants are reguarly parking in our tenants parking spaces. Clamping is looking likely. WIthout that sort of enforcement how do you keep control?

Having said that these clampers have obviously gone way over the top. The problem is that pretty much anyone can get the license. Landlords/site owners pretty hand over control to the clampers, and it is in their interest to clamp whenever possilbe.

No easy soloution unfortunately.

Councils should effect more research before handing out these clamping permits willy-nilly. They must be more accountable by their actions. I'm assuming that they also set the guidelines by which some of these companies operate.

for the clamper or the clamp?

Neither. The padlock;)

We have private clamping near here. They charge £325 to release the vehicle! If you are unlucky enough to have not noticed the first clamp in 24hrs, they put a second one on!

One of my brothers specialises in sorting out just such unfair matters;)

Mate and I had a run in with some clampers at Kingston Uni, if we damaged the clamp we would be up for criminal damage, so we jacked the car up, let the tyre down and had just enough room to pull the clamp off over the deflated tyre, chucked the spare on and pumped the original one back up, then gave the clamp back to him which he inspected and couldnt find anything wrong, he then demanded £125, we then told him it was a release fee and not a clamp fee and as we released it without him he can `go away` (expletive deleted)

Clamping should be progressed to include people who stray onto private land, or loiter in public places. Get chained to a ring in the wall until you pay the £500 release fee. LOL.

I like many live in an area where there are no clampers and we manage fine without them. If someone parks where they shouldn't a quiet word and they move, so on problem. The problem is where would the criminal fraternity legally raise their funds for drugs etc. if they could not go round clamping.

The first political party who state they will ban clamping will certainly get my vote.

Another thought, make the 12th August open day for the "shoot the clampers" season. 95% of the population and 100% of the grouse would welcome it. The government would make a fortune from the VAT raised from increased cartridge sales, so everyone would be happy except for the b*^**^d clampers, so everything to gain and nothing to loose there.

Wheel clampers blockaded for 4 hours .....
Here in Torquay we have a clamping firm that appears to be illegally clamping vehicles on council owned land?

Is clamping a fair and just means of preventing unauthorised parking, or is it demanding money with menaces? granted there may not be a direct threat but offenders might feel intimidated and does the punishment suit the crime, £300 for a ten minute piece of illegal parking?

We have read of folks stealing No Parking cones and placing hem outside their property to reserve their personal parking space, surely this offence is far more serious? They are either stealing the cone or have in their possession stolen property, then by placing this cone on the road, they are guilty of obstructing the highway? :)

John

Glojo, glad your back mate, people moving cones are stealing them and blocking highways, but I dont think they have stolen property in their possession as its not on their property??

;) :) Hi,
Sorry about that, fik olde me never made my point very clear. I am assuming the cone was placed by them to mark out 'their space' Where does this cone live when their car occupies the piece of public highway outside their house? :) It could be the cone is legitamately purchased from Screwfix etc

regards
John

interesting, if they left it on the road while parked its obstructing the highway, if they left it on the pavement its blocking that, if they put it on their property its stealing unless they own it in which case it goes back to illeagally obstructing the highway, if you dump a skip in the road or bag of sand or something thats different, you are meant to ring the police who issue guidelines of H&S, flashing lights, road narrows signs or whatever, most builders just know the form and do it anyway, I doubt if you rang the police and said I wish to use some cones to stop people parking outside my house you would be told how many laws your breaking by doing so, if I did that and was asked my name I would just say Red Ken,

I believe the reason they can clamp cars is because you are entering into a contract by parking where a notice is displayed, that being the case would it not be legal to put a notice on your car to the effect that anyone clamping your car is by their actions giving you the clamp to do with as you please, then they in turn would be entering into a contract with you..giving you the legal right to destroy the clamp and go on your way..

Would that work?

Isn't clamping on private land illegal in Scotland? Why do they have all the rights? Rights to free further education Rights to full medical chemo treatments etc etc......

Wonder if they would have all these rights if they were completely independent and had to raise their own revenue through taxation...
