Clicking sound while driving

Evening all.

Sometimes when I driving there is a loud clicking sound coming from the front of the car. It's not the vents, it happens when driving there is no noise when stationary.

The quicker I drive the more louder and more frequent the sound is, as I slow down the so does the clicking sound. When I'm not accelerating or going downhill the sound is less frequent. I don't notice the noise on a short drive. Sods law will dictate I will take the car to a garage and it will be silent!

The car drives the same, no warning lights. Car is a CLK 320 209. The noise is annoying, only use the car on weekends but the noise is driving me mad.

No issues with car when it had B service 2 months ago, and it an MOT last week with no issues, help !

Thanks in advance

Difficult to confirm without hearing/seeing it but my initial guess would be a dust shield at the back of the brake disc.

Possibly something trapped in it, like a stone or, more likely, it's got bent and is rubbing on the disc.

Wheel bearing(s).

Duff brake pad spring(s).

I would check the inside of the tyres to ensure no damage or bulging in the tyre wall.

Might sound stupid, but worth ruling out as simple as it sounds - check to make sure none of your tyres have a stone or something stuck in the tread.
I had a similar annoying ticking on a car years ago, and was very relieved when i finally found the little stone in the front tyre.
Fingers crossed it's something trivial like that!

A stone in the tyre can cause all that noise! Crickey! I will ask the garage to check for stones in the tyres as well. I can't see anything obvious but need the car on the ramp to check this properly

Yup! I've definitely had it also. Very annoying.

So much so I had to locate it.

Turned out to be one of those flinty driveway / beachy type stones (technical terminology!).

Could be parking brake not releasing fully. Mine does this now and again. Put the parking brake on full with a firm shove on the foot operated button. Release. Repeat a few times. Then drive it. If it’s sticking a bit that’s usually enough to release mine fully! I’ve also had a chirping dust shield behind the discs which was sorted by me bending it slightly by hand (they are made of thin metal).

Let me guess a sort of "shik, shik shik" noise as the shoe is not quite clear of the drum? - I know that sound well, and it does go away after a little while. That doesn't stop your passenger asking what the noise is.

The noise is intermitant don't notice on a short drive, but once it starts it doesn't go away. The car is booked in for Saturday so will see what garage says

On my old CLK I had a similar noise. The clip holding the parking brake cable had come loose allowing the cable to rub intermittently on the turning prop shaft. £50 to sort it out!

A little update, it was in fact the parking cable clip that had broken. The mechanic said it was a very common fault, £30 all sorted, thanks for all the suggestions.

I had have wheel bearing issues before on cars and the wheel shakes and vibrates at speed, this is just a clicking sound

I once bought a 2001 Alpina B10 V8 and I noticed it clicking at the front.

Was wheel bearings but that was the only symptom.

I'm used to a drone when they are gone from previous cars although I imagine if left long enough you would eventually get shakes and vibrations.
