CLS55 - Lifter Noise

I’m hoping someone can help me. I also apologize if this has been covered in another thread!

I am an owner of a CLS55 in Canada and bought it back in June 2018.

I haven’t driven the car much other than the 2 weeks I initially bought it. The car has been in my garage ever since partly because of repairs and partly the snowy weather now.

Anyways I did an oil change today and then started up the car up....ran fine when cold but as as soon as the car got to 80 degrees the clicking noise kicked off. It’s mainly emanating from the top of the engine at the drivers side (valve cover).

Clicking sound definitely wasn’t there when I originally bought it.

Can someone help in terms of my options?

Assuming it turns out to be crap in the hydraulics because of my lack of driving....should I use some kind of additive to potentially clear out the crap on the hydraulic lifters? Would this be catastrophic to my engine can someone let me know?

Thanks!

No

Did the issue only start after the oil change?

In a nutshell...Yes.

Detailed story:

I did 2 oil changes....

The car originally had 5W-40 oil in it when I bought it.

The initial oil change I did was back in November where I used Mobil 1 0W-40 (put in 9 Quarts). Thought it was a good idea to use 0W-40 since I’m in Canada (winter time).

I noted that WIS recommends either 0W-40 or 5W-40 oils.

Fired up then engine and the noise kicked in once the engine got to operational temperature (80 degrees).

Went to the Internet and read up a few posts and thought maybe the oil is too thin and I should go back to 5W-40......so.....did the oil change today and put in 9 Quarts of Liqui Moly (per MB Spec).

Fired up the engine and basically got the same result once the car got to Operating Temp!

At first I would measure the oil pressure. If that is ok then it could be a stuck or dirty lifter.

Remember, if your car has a M113 engine there is absolutely zero monitoring of the oil pressure by the car itself , I cant speak of those with M273 or M156 engines.

Just to add my engine is a little noisy when warm, I switch to 0-40 to 5w40 and it's 90% quieter than it was.

To measure the pressure you can use an access port on the front of the engine. Let me look for a YT movie.

Found it. You can check the pressure. If it's low then possible the gasket problem.

There's a valve making noise when the engine is cold.
I think it's called purge valve, correct me if I'm wrong?
Sound is a ticking noise on cold engine.
Could it be this valve?

My C55 can and often does sound like a skeleton knocking one out in a tin dustbin when it gets cold. By cold I mean UK cold, so -4c.

It always has done this despite many oil changes and engine flushes and lifter treatments. I am told by my Indie it’s the norm. I believe him.

It does usually quieten down if I let it warm up nicely then give it a few Rev cycles up to 7.5k while stationary.

Google lifter noise in cold weather.

Good luck.

I second what Merc85 said....I noticed the engine has quietened down after moving to 5W-40 but will be checking the Oil Pressure regardless. Canada has had a warmer winter than usual (around -5’C.....thankfully not as bad as last year -35 being the worst!)

When I rev it up I noticed the engine is quiet for a few minutes but slight noise comes back from subsequent idling.

Could you guys point me to the Oil Pressure specs for the M113K engine?
