Hi Everyone - hoping you can help; I have a E220d AMG line, which when I would activate full beam used to have what I would call a 'curtain effect', as in the lights would activate in full beam from in to out on the road, in a kind of opening effect that looked great - however of late (following a recent service), they just come on as any other car would, straight away... has anyone experienced this and is there a way to get the effect back? thank you!

My full beam only comes on with the effect when I'm using auto full beam. If I just pull the stick for full beam it comes on all at once.

Hi, so I checked...move to auto and pushing the stalk forward doesnt introduce the curtain effect of the lights as it used to - previously pushing the stalk used to initiate the effect?

I haven’t checked, and my car is earlier but i think you might be able to activate and deactivate in the settings menu? Maybe the ILS has been deactivated with an update or something so needs to be turned back on?

Yes there is this also in my W213.

Putting the lights on auto and pushing the stalk forwards doesn't necessarily activate full beam, it comes on when the ILS deems full beam is required, and you'll generally only see the 'curtain effect' on a dark road.

Interesting, thanks as previously I didnt use auto full beam, and to be honest ive not tested it on a really dark road yet. Is there a way of resetting or checking the ILS through the dashboard?

I've only seen this 'curtain effect' when using auto full beam - unless maybe the software on your car works differently to mine. I've only seen it when driving down a dark road, and any obstacle (car in front, car approaching) goes away and then the beam spreads to cover the entire road.

Or are you maybe talking about the little dance you get when you first turn on the dipped lights, which doesn't put full beam on but runs a test of the LEDs from the inside out?

No idea about testing/resetting the ILS I'm afraid.

We are assuming that the car has got "Intelligent light system", if it has it will be written on the side of each headlamp.
With the light switch in "Auto" position and the stalk pushed forward the main beam should come on;
1. If it is properly dark with no street lamps
2. The road speed is over about 30mph
3. There are no lights from other vehicles illuminated in front of or coming toward your car.
Also when my auxillary battery needed replacemt main beam assist was one of the things that stopped working

I was really disappointed to learn that although my new van has ILS (a £1595.00 option I ticked) it is not the same system I’ve had on the last 3 MB cars.

It has auto high beam and Corning function BUT not the all important (to me) ‘high beam plus’ where it adjusts full beam according to oncoming vehicles and ones you are following. So they aren’t dazzled. Puts them in a black box.

Apparently that is now a separate system and a £200 option (which I would have paid). I’ve asked the dealer if it can be retrofitted but it can’t.

It annoys me that the van is missing the very function that I wanted when I spec’d the ILS.

Frustrating when manufacturers mess about with these things to make a few extra quid. 😤
