DfT report reveals that the UK is struggling to provide enough EV chargepoints for drivers | RAC Drive

While this has been obvious for some time there are other implications for the direction that the manufacturers of many EV vehicles seem to be taking. That is a predominance of large SUV designs which in EV form can now weight close to 3 tons. This may have implications for the structural integrity of multi-storey car parks which were never designed to house multiple vehicles of that sort of weight!

Part of the issue is that down here in London there are plenty of EVs, which means that the commercials are there for energy providers to install charging points everywhere, and this is why there's no shortage of them.

However, in order to make the EV a viable proposition for long cross-country journeys, there needs to be more investment in fast chargers to be installed in motorway services, and unfortunately the commercial viability isn't quite there yet.

It's a chicken and egg situation, really: people don't use EVs for long journeys because of shortage of fast chargers along the route, and the energy providers are not keen to install them because demand is low.

Add to this the fact that motorway chargers need to be fast, meaning higher installation and running costs and higher consumer price per kWh.

The commercial viability hurdle is significant for many motorway services because the incoming power bearer has insufficient capacity to support multiple EV chargers, so would require upgrading.
