I bought a supposedly refurbished steering rack and fitted it, now the steering is really stiff, particularly on the motorway. So either the preload is too tight, or it needs coding or adapting to my car (CLS 250D 2013)
I located the preload adjuster from examining the old unit, I made a tool to fit and I have been tweaking it gradually. I thought it was ok but on a long motorway trip today it was not great. Still too stiff, making it slightly hard to drive.
I know there are many part numbers from different cars that might fit each other but with different characteristics, however the EPC shows two part numbers for my VIN. My old rack was one, and the new rack is the other. However the indication for both parts is identical.
There are no error messages on the dash however I don't have a code reader.
The alignment has been done.
So, does it need coding? Is there some adjustment other than the oreload screw?
