Yes you have a DPF, and probably 5W/40 is the oil - or 5W/30. I'm using the latter but starting to favour the former.

Welcome to the Forum BTW!

With a DPF you need to use 229.51 which is a low SAPs oil.

Hi thanks a lot for your reply’s so it’s defo a dpf model and 229.51 oil the dealer told me no numbers like 229.51 only said use 0w-30

The problem with dealers in general is that you don't get to speak to a technical person.

The Service Advisor's training teaches him or her how to price-up a service, not how engines work or what the oil does.

If the car is booked with an official MB dealer or with an established MB specialist, then you need not worry at all as they will use the correct oil for your car.

If you are supplying your own oil to the garage, or having the service carried-out by a garage who do not specialise in MB, or just going the DIY route, then you need to make sure that the oil container's label specifies that it 'Meets..' or 'Approved by..' MB Spec Sheet 229.51.

Great thanks a lot for that info 190 that is where I was at today with my car as it had a bit of a lunge while changing down gears when cold and I asked about oil when I was there. Is the 229.51 fully synthetic oil cheers

Sorry 190 I meant it was Newcastle mercedes where I was at today as it’s my local dealership
Just let them get on with it then.... they'll use the correct 229.51 oil.

(BTW all MB oils are classified as 'full synthetic' BUT this classification is in fact very broad e.g. it allows some non-synthetic oil to be mixed into the formula etc)

Yes all 229.51 oils will be marketed as fully synthetic. In the strictest sense almost none of them will be but it's not something to worry about and to explain why they are not 100% synthetic is too involved for this forum without boring everyone to tears. MB's spec 229.51 focuses on how the oil performs in a number of specific tests and that's what we should all be concerned about rather than the "full synthetic" label. Basically by defining their own quality spec MB have saved us the worry of which oil to use.

If you want to know what MB's specs mean in detail it's all here:

I get the oil for my c220 from mb Newcastle eBay shop. Genuine mb oil is cheap these days.

Yes, there's "synthetic" and then there's synthetic. - Technically the phrase "fully synthetic" is a marketing term, so something like an esther base stock is quite different from one blended with mineral oil.

Majority of 229.51 oils are 5w-30 but of late been using Motul 8100 X-Clean C3 5W-40.

Can use it in every car we have. Meet all of the following and can be used in many Far Eastern vehicles

  • ACEA C3
  • API SN / CF
BMW Long Life 04 (LL 04)
Ford WSS M2C 917A
GM Dexos2
MB 229.51
Porsche A40
Renault RN0710
Renault RN0700
VW 502.00
VW 505.00
VW 505.01

I imagine that will be good oil as Motul is one of the few manufacturers still making real synthetic oil based on Group 5 Esters rather than group 3 mineral oils.

To clue to real synthetics is in the price and I expect that this Motul oil is double the price of the genuine MB oil from Mercedes Newcastle. There will be nothing wrong with genuine MB oil but I smile when people think they are getting the very best oil when it's simple impossible at the price for it to be a true synthetic.
