Drain adblue tank after 20,00 miles, i have just read that on the web, seemed to be a MB instruction directive, but you never know, has anyone done this? or do you do it? or just always top it up?

It crystallises at say 24 months , 20k , so best to get any old out and in with the new .

My thoughts were if your adding 5/10 litres at a time its always being diluted. Then I suppose if a car stands for some time it may go stale ??

My (French) dealer didn't drain the tank, but just refilled, so I have continued to refill when the tank is 3/4 empty.
Had no problems and the car is now 10 years old.

The most important thing IMHO is to make sure that everything is perfectly clean when you do the refill.

I wonder if some of the problems with nox sensors and add blue tanks are because the adblue is not being changed on 20,000 services ?
Onefourtheroad, have you drained before adding? if so how with a pump like the ones from lidil? also did you wait for dash to tell you to add or just drain out and add? Thanks.
This could be helpful to us all with adblue.

I'm coming upto 2 years of ownership june 2022 . I have put 10 litres in , so maybe in January I'll pump it out and renew with only 5 or 10 litres and make it a yearly thing . From what I've read on nox sensors ,its the tips that carbon up so best to run clean fuel with additives for a cleaner burn.

Thanks for that. Yes i put in the shell v power £££££££ better safe than sorry.
As for draining would you sick a pipe in and get it all out or just most, as on one of the things i read it said go onto a star to reset  i can do without that agro as i don't have a computer set up to do that.

As I've already said, I wouldn't bother, but if you feel you must, just syphon it out.

I've seen no evidence of Adblue crystallising with age (there's no reason for it to do so) unless you get dirt or dust in the tank which can act as seeds for crystallisation.

IMHO, the less you mess about with the Adblue, the less chance you have of getting sh!t in there.

. Due to the limited durability of AdBlue®, AdBlue® has a 2 year lifespan from date of production. It is essential that AdBlue® is stored between minus 5 degrees and 20 degrees Celsius. AdBlue® can decompose if it is stored at 30 degrees or more for extended periods of time - ammonia can form in such instances.

In a nut shell for me , id say if your doing 3k a year over 2 years , do a drain and add fresh , if your doing enough miles to use it , I wouldn't worry.

Yea because of lockdown only done about 4k in the 14 months i've owned it, and its half full, so i will see how full it is around March time and then see about draining it if there's still a load in there, thanks.
