Morning, new to the group today. I ve got a 21 plate (reg May 2021) A220d automatic which I bought from a MB dealership, I’ve a service plan with MB and it’s done under 28500 miles. Engine started knocking and the dual mass flywheel has broken, it’s currently being repaired and will cost £4650 to fix. Everywhere I look says these should last much longer, generally quotes 100000 but many say life of engine. We ve friends who have their own garages and they’ve been really surprised that this has happened. Wondered what thoughts other members have please?

Have you had the car from new? if not how long have you had it? if it has full service history from MB and with only 28500 miles, I would be asking them to make a large contribution towards the repair

Dual mass flywheel?.....never even new any Merc auto had them (until I googled just now!) apart from some big engine dervs from other makers. I always associate them them with manual cars....I had one in my 6 speed ALFA....still original at 175,000 miles!!!

Hi, I bought it from MB Plymouth in June 2022 when it was 11 months old. It had about 8000 miles on the clock. It's been serviced by them on a service plan, no other garage has touched it apart from to have tyres done. It was even MOT by MB Plymouth. I've put 20000 miles on it in 2 years 7 months. thank you for getting back to me.

Ive never seen a DMF fail at anything like that low a mileage.....even if its out of warranty Id like to think that Merc should chip in with a goodwill contribution because of the low miles. Must have been a manufacturing fault......
Id also like to dee that bill broken down.....seems like a lot of cash for that job.....unless the part is stupidly priced.

Do regular torque converter auto gearboxes have a DMF , some DSG ones do.

Does the A220 have a DSG or TC ?

Any gearbox repair is going to be labour intensive due to the time taken and main dealer hourly rates, a fifteen hour job could see a labour cost of £3750 + parts.

With that mileage and comprehensive history i would like to think that there would be some form of "goodwill" from MB , but in this day and age cash is king more than customer loyalty and unfortunately mechanical things do break.

It is a DSG I’ve checked. I was quoted £195 plus vat an hour for labour which personally I think is ridiculously expensive.

Thank you, I’ve read they can last the life of a car so to have this happen on a car with 28500 miles I think is shocking

Why?

Main dealerships have expensive premises usually in prime locations, they have to maintain expensive workshops and tools, pay for Star /Xentry systems to be able to connect to MB for updates and coding etc.

That's why MB independents have lower charges per hour because they have lower overheads.

You do not have to use the main dealer, any MB Independent would charge considerably less.
