I'm sort of swaying away from buying a Discovery as my everyday car and going for an E320CDI W210 or an S320CDI W220 due to the large (unnecessary ) distances I travel. Fuelling the W140 is getting ridiculous

What sort of real world fuel economy do people get with these? Obviously I'd rather have the W220 - I'm starting to sway to these :o - but either would suit I guess, the main shock is that I'm actually considering a diesel!

I gather they are remappable being common rail? They seem to be reliable enough from what I see.

What sort of mileages do you do Lucas ?

35 MPG, maybe a little more if I avoid a lot of town driving.

Feindishly expensive for repairs, was quoted £1300 for 2 injectors last week.

Well I've done 6k in the W140 since September, funnily enough I only commute 14 miles a day, the rest is on my random roadtrips I do :o.

OK

As you know, I have an S500.

In town, I'm getting 17mpg average.
On a run, 25-28mpg normally. 30 is achievable.

You'd probably get about 25%-30% more in the diesel.

35mpg allround according to Parkers car guide(facts & figures)who from experience are very accurate.

Noise excepted getting a V8 is quite unfeasible :(

We had an early e class stright 6 from new in 2000.
Astonishing economy really, never seemed to matter too much how you drove it. We went to Italy several times fully loaded at 100 plus ( ;) ) and never seemed to get less than 34/35mpg. Round the doors it was canny at 29/30 IIRC. In terms of power, its not all about power in real day driving, its torque. And boy, do they have torque, in bundles. You will feel like its quicker than your 140, significantly so. I would compare ours to the s500 we had (w140). The 220 we have (430 lwb) is not as quick imho.

In real life around and about at 30 mph I only get about 25mpg. But that rises dramatically on extended runs at steady speeds up to and in excess of 70mph I will get closer to 45mpg. Fact. Sometimes I treat the engine to Shell Ultimate, loves it, feels more powerful (torqueful?) and even smoother. Such a great engine.

No v6 in the w210.

The engine in the 220 is excellent, its all the electrical and complexities in them that would potentially put me off. The 210 is very rusty, would a 211 be in reach??

A 211 is pushing it a little. I do like them though but I think I hanker after a W220 more.

The electricalness does worry me, especially as I'd be maintaining it myself. I refuse to pay someone for a job I can do myself :o:p.

I have considered not having a car for a few months and saving up madly. Trouble is god invented the pub :(.

S320 cdi...

I have a (April) 2001 S320 CDI and I managed an average of 50.4 mpg between Crawley and Rotherham (~200 miles)! The Parkers Guide gives an extra-urban figure of just 46 mpg!
