The rear door to my estate W124 won't stay up any more.
It was fine a few days ago. I did notice that it was not opening as quickly as it used to and I had to push it up. This morning it would not go up at all. I am assuming that the 'struts' must have 'leaked' and the weight of the door is too much for them to keep open.

Is this a repair or replace job and can it be a DIY one?

Anyone attempted to do this themselves?
Does it take long and is there an issue with alignment, etc..?

There is nothing technically difficult with this job but it is a bit of a fiddle re-locating the 'c' clips onto the struts. Dont take the tailgate off. The struts are removed after removing the rear interior roof panel and lowering the head lining. Getting the rear interior panel back under the side window seal is a bit of a game too. Support the tailgate securely too...its way heavier than you imagine. Good luck!

Thanks Conerstone, maybe it's best left to someone who has done it before but I will think about it and see if I can get my head around it.
Still a bit cold to do this in the open.

Cheers

Ours did the same but only with the load cover attached. Interestingly after fully unwinding the load cover it then went back to normal. Can only think the tension had increased somehow on the roller mechanism. They seem pretty finely balanced and very small changes in pressure can result in this problem.
