Well, mine was (2013 CLS SB, not Keyless Go). I knew of this fault on the electronic gearchange 722.9 models; I used to sh*t bricks thinking of it happening on the W164, which of course can't be towed (4WD) and would need either a crane lift or a dismounting-bed truck with four slippers to be recovered. Apparently (read on...) the cause is a module on the transmission case - easy to change if you can get at the area from beneath, but the part alone costs about £800.

It never happened with the W164, but it did on the CLS, first start of the day. Switch off and restart the engine, and the second or third time there was no problem, but of course, electrical problems just get worse with time.

I spent a fair bit of time on Google, and found this (it's an XENTRY Tip):

"Gear range D or R cannot be engaged.

Fault code B226600 logged in shift module (A80).

Topic number LI27.60-P-060724 Version 4

Function group 27.60 Gearshift, control Date 05-18-2015

Validity MODEL 166 in combination with TRANSMISSION 722.9

Reason for change Remedy and damage code adjusted

Complaint: After the vehicle has stood idle for a long period (mainly at cold outside temperatures), it is not possible to engage gear range D or R. The fault code B226600 "The drive authorization data are implausible" is logged in the shift module (A80).

The complaint no longer occurs after an ignition reset.

Primarily vehicles with KEYLESS-GO (code 889) are affected.

Cause: When the vehicle is started, the on-board electrical system voltage drops and a communication problem can occur between the shift module (A80) and the electronic ignition lock (EIS).

Remedy: Please replace the starter battery/battery until advised otherwise.

Generally, the battery may only be replaced when a negative Midtronics test confirms a battery fault. In this case, the battery may also be replaced exceptionally under the following preconditions:

• In the quick test the fault code B226600 MUST be stored in the control unit A80,
• this quick test MUST be attached to the warranty claim and
• the warranty claim MUST make reference to this LI document."

Those were exactly my symptoms and fault code, and the main (80 AH) battery was the OE Varta, manufactured week 23 of 2013 (as stamped on the negative terminal top). I didn't bother with any sort of test at that age, I simply replaced it (with another Varta F21), and all is well. Phew!
