EML Problem

Hi all,

I have had work carried out on my A class A180 where it was not heating up/cooling down correctly. Work was done beginning of January at a cost of £480 all in.

I have had the part fixed and EML reset but it keeps reappearing after a week or so.
I have taken it back to the garage 3 times and they have kept it for the day every time to go back over the work to check for faults. They can’t find anything and are unsure why this is happening.

The car is running fine, heating up fine and all the parts are all flowing well when plugged in for a thorough diagnostic, but still keep getting a light.

Any ideas?

The mechanics seems to think it could be an issue with the car software and has suggested contacting Mercedes to see if the ECU has any updates or needs reprogramming. Has anyone been told this or heard of anything similar with their car? I can’t say I have before but I’m not a car expert haha!

Thanks in advance
Lewis

Is the garage you are using a Mercedes specialist with Star diagnostics?
I ask, as there should be a fault code recorded if the EML is showing and Star should be able to pinpoint the problem.
Unfortunately I'm unaware of any Mercedes specialists in your part of the country.

It’s just an independent garage, not Mercedes.

He did tell me the fault code but don’t have it to hand - although it’s the same one to the part he has fixed and refitted twice to get the EML to clear to which he can’t.

He then mentioned it potentially being a software issue that only Mercedes can look at and update/clear.

I’m Coventry based and thought there were Mercedes garages nearby?

Thanks for getting back to me!

Not a lot to go on here, but just because a fault code mentions a component does not necessarily mean that it is faulty. It is just the first step in diagnosis.

The fact the garage then comes up with "think it could be an issue with the car software" reinforces that they really don't know what they are doing. Take it somewhere else.

Updating the software is indeed a logical first step when trying to diagnose difficult-to-pinpoint faults. However, this can only be done by either an MB dealer or an MB independent specialist who has genuine MB STAR diagnostic computer.

This is the same garage I paid £400 to to fit the broken part which actually was broke, but unable to get the EML to go now.

I’m kind of at a dead end. I’ve paid the labour and parts for it to be fixed but the engine is saying otherwise…

I have called Mercedes today to ask similar to what you said.

Their reply was ‘£210 diagnostic fee’ - I already know what is wrong which has all stemmed from the part I had fixed. Then a larger fee to have potential software updated which could then or not be anything 🙄

Do you think I should reach out to them and have the software updated. Do you have any idea of how much this stuff kind of costs?

I like to drive flashy cars, but honestly am absolutely clueless when things go wrong haha!

Unfortunately, all cars suffer from faults, being flashy, just makes it more expensive to fix, generally.
