Although the CLK 220 CDI displays the oil quantity on the dashboard I like the idea of seeing the level manually. There is provision for this and there are dipsticks available. Anyone use these, as there is quite a variety and not sure if they can be left in the tube, or have to be removed as is the case with the auto transmission dipstick.

There are plenty on the “bay of fleas” though not sure which one you would need. Have you asked at Mercedes, they may do a generic one with the correct markings ??
I don’t think they are meant to be left in either.

I think I found an alternative as none of those on flea bay matched this model. Curtain wire. Put it in the tube, measured, and cut to length. Then at the correct oil level put a mark with pliers. Coiled up after use and now lives in the engine bay next to the transmission dipstick. I did notice however the oil is very black not long after an oil change.

Diesel engined vehicles turn their oil black very quickly after an oil change.

Yep...soot particles...not oil filter can remove those...too tiny.
