Hi,
In need of some assistance,
When I start my CLS it’s starts all fine at cold start but shakes for about ten mins whilst it warms up...... is this normal?

no ticks ? how many miles it has done ? what year ?
do you do your own service ? are there any other noises you hear ?
many many things come to mind from a simple emissions to "oh no too much blowby from cold pistons " to dirty fuel filter or weak fuel pump or leaking injector/s sticking valve/s etc etc, you would notice a real bad "shake" if mounts . but could always check it by l@@king under the bonnet while running and give a slight rev and shut it down to see if it jumps . there are plenty of reasons a engine shakes when cold and goes away after heating , after all metal/alloy expands when it heats, but just a theory as it could be any reason . take to a Mec (a decent one) and he will diag it .

Thanks all for replying,
The car has done 25k miles and it’s a 2015, cls350d.
Once the engine is warm there is no shaking what so ever only on cold start, I get no messages on the dash of faults either.

OK runju, in the past I've had diesel-engined cars that have the same symptoms and they were caused by :

1. Faulty glow plugs or glow plug circuit, or

2. Viscous fan permanently on, over-cooling the engine.

Thanks you thebiglad,

I have just recently bought the car and it’s well within its years warrenty so will be taking it back to mercedes :-(
I ddnt think much of it but I hope it’s nothing serious, didn’t think it will give me any issues due to the low mileage.

I’m sure they will try and fob me off with a story ‘ they all do that’
Booked in for next week :)

being a diesel it also can be caused by injectors by a off spray pattern which can cause rough running at cold but good at hot.

Thanks, will thier star system pick this up? Even though I have no failure messages on the dash

That seems too soon for engine mounts tbh

my w203 220 cdi was very uneven on the revs after starting and levelled out after about 10 minutes. It also levelled out when the revs were brought above 1000rpm.
The problem was the sensor at the rear of the rail. When they are on the way out they are often bumpy to feel at the plastic cap.

That’s the strange thing, when the engine is slightly shaking in cold start the revs are stable and no movements of struggling, if that makes any sense.

If there is no fluctuation in the revs it has to be something other than the combustion and its allied sensors. Only recently after replacing the fuel sensor I noticed that the engine still vibrated a little when cold and when coming back down the revs before stopping, but the revs remained stable.

I noticed that the serpentine belt was flapping on start up but becoming stable after a few minutes and I tracked it down to a weak belt tensioner. I could see it moving about half an inch as if the pulley was not completely round. The pulley was fine but the spring in the tensioner had become weak. I changed it and all was fine.
A friend had a similar problem only this time it was a very slight movement in the water pulley.

What revs are you idling at when cold? It should be at the 800 mark (bar below 1k). If it idles at 600 (normal when the car is warmed up) then that is your problem.

i think at some stage of the engines life we all suffer this.

just by chance , is your engine doing the same thing ? surging ? from regulator ?
