Hi
I know this isn't a Mercedes question, but it is motoring :D

I'm looking to change our Honda CRv which is now coming up to 10 years old, as it is becoming very thirsty to run. Petrol auto. Getting around 23 mpg with 30 mpg on a long run.

Has anyone any experience of the Ford they could share?

Another car is the VW Tiguan TDi DSG.

Or we may just stick to Honda and get our third CRv.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

The fact that you've owned the Honda for so long makes your question a rhetorical one in my opinion.

How about the 2.2d of what you have but the new model?

That should be 40mpg plus car easily in manual form?

As above it just works and does what it does well :)

The Honda Turbo diesel 2.2 litre is now in its 2nd iteration-- they switched the turbo from back to front among other things and reckoned to be a good combination with their 5 speed [ developed in house by Honda] conventional automatic gearbox. The Ford powershift and VW DSG gearboxes are essentially twin geartrain preselect gearboxes with automated clutches. There are 2 versions of the VW GEARBOXES also--- a 6 speed with wet clutches and a 7 speed with dry clutches the dry clutch models use a lot less expensive gearbox fluid but can't transmit the same levels of torque--- there have also been anecdotal reports of clutch engagement problems. On that basis I would go for the tried and tested Honda TECHNOLOGY EVERY TIME. You think that's thirsty? I do under 23mpg all the time!

Fair points - I just was looking through Auto trader etc .. Yes I think it will be a Honda again...they do as was said -- just work. :thumb:

We have a MKVIII Accord auto. Honda make their own autos and it's a very smooth 6spd shifter. None of the cold temp 1st/2nd gear clonks of the 7G. It's available with the 2.2d in the CRV but it does knock off the economy somewhat (5-6mpg) compared to the manual. We don't do many miles in the Accord so we bought a 2yr old 2.4 petrol - saving £5-6K over the cost of a diesel. We had quite a few turbo problems with our two preivous Accord cdti so went petrol this time. It does around 30mpg. Very occasionally putting it into Sport mode, using the paddle shifters, it sounds great at 7500rpm!
