Are they actually 6-wheel drive?

yes, i believe they have an extra gearbox on the back of the transfer case with two outputs and run the rearmost prop along side the front one and over the rear one through a bearing on the side of the front diff housing i think. The old 6x6 landrovers used to run the rear prop over the top of the front axle in a similar manner.
