Help!

I have a W203 Avantgarde C200 K Auto, today the car started and warning lights flashed up ESP,SRS stayed on the car drove but was "jerky" going in to drive and would't change gear!. Stopped car re started and all was OK! Tried to use the car again this evening started car engine lamp stayed on and againd car wont change out of first !!

Anyone else had this problem and is it a simple fix or is it a dealer Job ?

Is there anything I can check or clean myself ?

Cheers Elkesprint

These are complex things and need someone good,, often the esp module,, some cars suffered from corroded connections in the plug on the ESP module, thats the cheapest fix and may be that, clean it with a good non drying switch cleaner

The jerkiness going into drive and refusal to change gear signify that the ECU has selected "limp home mode". A variety of thing can cause this and you will need to have the fault codes read in order to determine the cause.
On restarting the engine the car often reverts to normal, and sometimes the fault doesn't occur again, but you should still have the fault codes read to find the cause.

Thanks !

for the replies I am not very technically minded, I will have a good look around the engine and see if there's anything obvious thats causing the problem, if not I thinks it's off to the indie I shall go!

Hopefully It wont be too expensive

Any other suggestions ?

Did you have the limiter pressed in? I had the same problem.. dealer sorted the SRS light as this stayed on after restarting the engine

Hi Sem

Where is the speed limiter button thingy ?

Thanks Elkesprint

Speed delimiter is there only if you have cruise control. Read the owner manual how to use the speed delimiter. If you don't have cruise control then you don't have speed delimiter. If SRS light stayed on then you have a problem with the airbags. Send it to the indie, it won't cost you anything unless there are parts to be changed. Diagnostic equipment are required nowadays to rectify fault, it not a matter of obvious look and fix. Even an MB technician does not know what to do without referring to the computer. I once sent my W211 to reset the Neckpro head restrain. It took them one hour to find the right pin to reset by looking at WIS. I don't see where it described in my own copy of WIS.

Isnt it more likely that the display said ESP/ABS or BAS this all fits in with a speed signal fault and the SRS is really nothing to do with the way the car drives and no connection

Yes if i remember correctly the ESP/ABS and SRS lights first came on originally, then after restart just SRS light. I put it down to the delimiter being on.

ESP/ABS/BAS can be the plug already mentioned, and also steering angle sensor amongst other things, if these faults are generated then cruise will be deactivated.
SRS - could be one of a hundred things, but of course once the light is on .... even fixing the problem makes no difference , has to be software reset.
