dechrome?

Looking at the rather sexy clk55 posted in the members gallery got me thinking... loose or keep the chrome...

Easy to do?

Years ago I had the wheels on my old '65 Chev Bel-Air re-chromed. They told me at the time that they would have to 'Sand-Blast' the old stuff off. These were steel wheels though, so pretty tough.

Ciao, Bill.

Sorry - i meant the chrome plastic trim on the side of the cars?

I have done this (look at my 2 galleries for comparisions) by removing the door trim, unclipping the crome from the rest of the trim, sanding it down, priming, spraying and laquering (take your time - 2-3days) and clip it together again.

1 of the panels has had 1 or 2 fakes come off which I have fixed with a touch up pen. - I guess I rushed that part of trim.

THats the one!

That much hard work.... were the trim(s) easy to come off? and is spraying needed?

Trims come off easy with 1 screw.

The major trouble is, to seperate the crome from the trim, there are a about 6 circle 'H' clips they look a bit like this:

(H)

What ever you do, Dont break more than 1 on each panel, as you cannot buy these from the stealer without buying the full trim panel again!

I used a pair of paper scissors in the gaps of the 'H' and twisted clockwise, with a little struggle, they pop out.

Hard to explain, but with a panel off, you will see what I mean.

Edit: Oh yeah, dont spray the trim with the crome attached, if you do this random air bubbles appear later on and it looks crap & you will have to start all over again.

I would not lose the chrome because it will then look like a "Clasic" model which does not come with chrome strip inserts on the side/bumpers...

Personally, I would leave the chrome in place.

Cheers Flash - I am playing with the idea and I do like the clean lines of a non chrome finish but agree the newer models look better with the more subtle touch of chrome.

Lets see what happens!!

The plastic trim on the sides of the car is available from the stealership without chrome and isn't very expensive (commonly scuffed item etc). I could look up some part numbers if someone was interested. They might even be available pre-painted (even cheaper!).

I was quoted about £50 to £80 per item from dealers

You can get this done for free if you park in some dodgy places near where I live :D
