Could anyone please tell me where Itunes downloaded music is stored ie is there a default directory . I am thinking of reformatting my laptop and creating 1 40g C drive instead of its present 2x 20 g partitions . I dont want to risk losing my paid for itune tracks.

TIA

Mine is in:

My Doc's, My Music, iTunes, iTunes Music

There's something else that you need to be aware of for purchased tracks - the DRM technology that apple use only allows 5 machines to be authorised to play purchased content. Given that your current machine is one of them, when you reinstall this machine and authorise again, you'll be down to 3 left.

Make sure that before you nuke the machine, you select 'deauthorise computer' from the store menu. You won't 'lose' an authorisation.

A handy tip - I didn't realise this and reinstalled myself into a corner last year.

You can also log on to your Itunes account and deauthorise all computers - then you start again with all 5.....Itunes will then prompt the DRM-owner userid to logon if you then try to play DRM tunes on a PC that isn't authorised.

Useful if you have used up the 5 but don't quite know how!

Perect, thanks very much . I have also discovered that the paid for tunes all end in .M4P

:)

Im not sure with itunes but dont you have to back up the licences as well, otherwise they wont play?(I could be wrong tho)

You could also download Copypod which will allow you to backup your iPod and re-import it to itunes when you reinsall it.

be aware that if you put your collection on a drive on your network and map to that drive, eg as E:\music, that itunes often changes the filepath to the default if it cannot find the path, and then wants to rebuild your library (painfully for 30,000 songs)

Blassberg,

When you reinstall the machine, don't you just go into iTunes preferences and point it at the right directory first time?

Scott

PS - There's a new offline library feature in version 7. Not tried it myself yet.
