Increasing the profile of my E53 AMG Coupe tires

My current stock tires on my 2019 E53 Coupe are;
245/35/20
275/30/20
I am thinking that I want to increase the profile size of the tires mainly to fill the wheel arch but to also compensate for the shit roads here in Phuket Thailand, to:
245/40/20
275/35/20

Am I thinking correctly or not?
Thanks in advance

Neil

If you do that then you will increase the overall diameter of the tyres by about 24mm which will have an effect on the speedo reading.
To keep the same diameter you would need a 215/40/20 for the front - but that's a pretty unlikely size of tyre.
The other option is to go down to a 19 or even 18 inch rim if they will fit over the calipers which will then give you the option to fit higher profile tyres and maintain the overall diameter.

Apart from the speedo reading............any other downside. I'm not too worried about the speedo reading?

Tyres aren't manufactured to precise width and aspect ratio stated sizes so it's inaccurate in the real world to apply the calculators .

205 55 16 Vs 235 45 17 , what's the overall diameter difference ?

Need to have my homework marked.,..........

Rounding the numbers - 12mm unless the 16" tyres are down to the tread limits, then it is almost upto an 1" in old money.

Conversely, if the 17" tyres were at the limits then both overall diameters (16" new tyres and 17" worn tyres) would be very close.

You also risk the tyres fouling the wheel arches when the car is loaded (rear) or when turning (front).

And as others said you'll get slinky lower acceleration and slightly higher top speed.

I would think you’d easily be able to clear those brakes with some slightly smaller wheels - possibly 18s or 19s. Do MB specify what size wheels/tyres you can use on this model (eg winter sizes?)

If road surface/comfort is the driver of change here, that would definitely be the better way forward.

Would recommend smaller rim diameter with larger tyre sidewalls, keeping the correct dimensions rather than putting the wrong size tyres on.

Different car I know but on my old (212) E63 the difference in ride comfort between 19s and 18s was really quite noticeable. 20s may work well on the autobahn and track but probably not ideal for the roads in your part of the world.

I just paid £3000 for those wheels........ changing wheels are not an option
The wheel and tire size currently in use are stock size for the E53 coupé

@ndwgolf. Are your existing tyres Run Flats? If so, then keeping same size but changing to standard (non run flats) would be beneficial. It certainly worked for us.

That's right 11.4mm or so .

Real world..

Both evenly worn on the start of the wear bars .

That piece of wood is 22mm tall !

Yes mate there run flats. I'm looking at the mitchilin P4S tires when I replace the originals

So going for standard tyres AND up a size on the sidewall? If it’s doable then that should yield awesome results comfort wise. Keep us posted. 👍
