This I found incredible, Ssangyong in Korea (otherwise known as Daewoo) have a range called "Chairman". They have 2 ranges, "Chairman H" and "Chairman W". Check out these engine specs...

Chairmain H (1997 to present, based on the W124 Chassis), available with these mercedes engine options coupled to a 5G Tronic gearbox...

2.3 I4 150 148bhp
2.8 I6 200 197bhp
3.2 I6 220 217bhp
3.6 I6 280 275bhp <-- Still being manufactured??? (M104.941)

Chairman W (2008 to present) available with these mercedes options coupled to a 7G Tronic gearbox...

3.2 I6 XGi320 222bhp
3.6 I6 XGi360 247bhp <-- Still being manufactured??? (M104.941)
5.0 V8 XGi500 302bhp

According to Ssangyong's website for the Chairman W XGi360, it gives engine information for the 3.6...

Displacement - 3,598cc (compared to AMGs 3,606cc)
Bore - 91mm
Stroke - 92.4mm
Compression - 10,1:1

I thought M104 3.6 engine productions were stopped after the AMG E36/C36 models were discontinued?

If you look at the offering of the I4 and I6 they all have been obsoleted by Merc.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ssanyong purchased all the molds and tooling from Merc.
Curious what 5.0 V8 they are using...also looks like an obsolete Merc spec from the R129?

Ed, they are using the M113 engine for the XGi500 model

According to Wikipedia the 3.6 engine was only introduced in 2007, so it is unlikely to be the Merc / AMG 3.6.

Also, Daewoo sold out in 2000. The company is now owned by Mahindra (Indian jeep lookalike maker).

Yeah they are still being manufactured and the 3.6 is one of the engine choices.

Strangely its not as bad looking as I was expecting....the original MK1 Chairman however, was built using much of the W124 bodyshell and looked very odd.

I remember a while back a friend had a Musso, around ~2000 I think, and that had a Merc diesel engine. Seems as if they have been using MB engines for a while.

I thought the AMG 3.6 was a bored out 280 engine done by AMG. So can't be the same engine can it???

Yes the Sprinter engine I believe and it would also fit in an 308 type van. I had a Musso to pull my Jet ski, it ran great (I hear you could use veggie oil although I never did).

Most SsangYong's use Mercedes engines under licence by them.

SsangYong have always used Mercedes cast of drive-trains and latterly the sub structure pressings.
Most first line manufacturers sell their tooling and designs off to 2nd line manufacturers. It's a good revenue stream.

Had one of those as well, the 5 cylinder engine was fine the rest of it was a nightmare, paint failings and electrical gremlins, Mrs Abecketts was pregnant with number 2 at the time and being marooned in a car park on a number of occasions with number 1 child wailing does not bring back fond memories.

Come to think of it number 1 still wails and he's almost 18

Mine was Ok for two years and engine was low mileage but one day it did not start and about two days later I got rid of it as I heard they can be a nightmare.
