Hi, my son is interested in buying a V6 CLK with the engine number 27296030475298.
Now for the life of me I can’t work out if this engine is within the range of engines that could have the problematic balance shaft!
Any chance one of you more intelligent types could tell me please? The car is an 06 reg.
Thanks.

Hi,
My former CLK 350 v6 on an 06 plate had the timing chain and sprocket work done at 60k miles before I bought it. If there isn’t any evidence of the work being performed I would expect it will need doing. The car ran faultlessly up to 97k afterward.
You don’t mention the mileage of the vehicle, other forum members may be able to advise on the longest surviving original timing set.

Strange as based on the engine number provided you are in the clear but being an 06 reg would suggest otherwise as this change took place mid 2008.

Get the engine oil analysed around 30-40£
If oil is new don't bother.
M272 is cracking motor, very smooth and nice noise when wound up.
How many actually fail 5%?

Great cars. They were the absolute bees knees according to colleagues who had them as company cars back in 2006.

Very elegant, and stylish with plenty of power for the real world.

Probably more than 5% but still low % yes, the problem is that it is a potential £££££ repair writing cars of this age off.

As a worked example: 17 years on, it looks like 20% of these have been scrapped, The SORN number reflects high days and holiday usage, especially for convertibles.

I was quoted 2.5K£ around 10 years ago, probably cheaper to replace with second hand one.
which can leadsto a whole world of new pain........
better to just cut your losses ime
