I don't know how plastic cars (Renaults spring to mind) are getting a 5 star NCAP rating, when compared to the likes of a W210 or W211. I know what I would rather be a passenger in, in the event of a crash. Steel is generally stronger than plastic from my understanding.

Wings, door skins etc are mild steel on most cars and have little if any influence on a car's safety, so even if they are made of plastic, GRF or aluminium a car's safety is not altered.
By modern standards a W210 is nothing special WRT to safety. Modern MB are however safe cars.
