True.

For those who are concerned about finger prints, buy spectacle wipe sachets and keep them in the glove box. Unless you have the very latest screens spanning the full dashboard then they will be fine. I can clean several iPads and iPhones with one.

Those concerned with fingerprints must still have a Nokia, as an iPhone or smartphone would drive them potty.

That was because all the (then) young people knew was physical keys, calls and texts, and not what the future held. Young people are not really an effective barometer of technology.

PS A quick wipe with a screen wipe (from a sachet) or clean microfibre cloth with suitable screen cleaner is all it takes to remove finger wipes from a touchscreen. The work of a moment 👍🏻

You have a valid point there. An example closer to home, ie myself, I was anti-online banking until about 5/6 years ago. Then I was anti, banking apps until about 18 months ago and that bankers app is one of the best things on my phone. I did have home security apps but was unsure re the banking app.


However, I have to disagree re the touch screens as on of our children has an SUV with buttons but the have a touchscreen satnav display. Yes it has buttons and a an infrequent passenger in his car on long trips, I've tried to change the satnav and it was hard keeping my finger on the right location on the screen. In his car he has good buttons that are easy for him and me as a passenger to control, EG, the seat heat/cool functions, the fan speeds and the climate control, its all very easy to follow and a driver just reaches out. As I said in my earlier post, EuronCap intend to assess and award safety ratings that include the use of these touch screens. Hopefully, they use their brain and do these tests whilst the car is travelling in city traffic and A/B roads and motorway speeds. I guess what I'm saying is that you just can't beat a few good knobs in a car. lol.
 
I can see the advantage in having a large clear touch screen, but for important functions you can’t beat a physical button that you instinctively know where it is.

The latest SL is lovely, apart from the central iPad that looks like an after thought.
 
Even Volvo have gone totally screen crazy. Seat heating are screen only, they went so far now you'll need to go into the screen system to adjust the rearview mirrors!
That's totally at odds with the previous logic that said all basic functions should be accessible without taking your eyes of the road.
 
To be fair.....your rearview mirrors should have been checked and adjusted before you set off....and how often do you ever even touch them?

On long drives if I adjust my seat, I sometimes want to adjust the mirrors too.
Happens regularly.
 
I'd like a bit more control over the temp than that please! I have this and it's pretty simple and easy to use..... and no touch controls....just real switches.

About MB "shuns..."

They will soon change their mind when in a couple of years Euro N'Cap and the like assess the safety/ease of use of these phatehtic touch-screens.

Never mind the "finger marks" etc, one of the things, one of several changing my car is the lack of buttons

Ideally, a button or a knob is needed to quickly change the air vents position, heat/cliamte up and down - phone buttons along with wipper functions even though I guess every new car comes with auto wippers and lights these days. Even the heated/cooled seat buttons must at the very least have on off buttons.

Take my word for it, MB will change their minds and I but they have already designing cars with important buttons that comprise safety.

Talking re safety, I'm sure using some functions whilst driving is more dangerous than using a hand held phone
