Afternoon all,

I recently discovered the ATF cooler was leaking, whilst investigating this, I found oil on the under tray an the front cove milled by the crank pulley. Well I stripped it all out and tech friend brought special tool to change pulley, the good news is that it wasn't leaking from the suspected area as the pulley had already been changed. It was the small plate under the oil filter, fitted the superseded cover and gasket, new oil cooler, pipes etc.

Fitted the rad & condenser, used snap on tool to create a vacuum in cooling system (as I have with hundreds of cars) held a vacuum, didn't drop so filled it, run the car up so it's piping hot.

Whilst having a poke around, dipped the ATF fluid oil, checked washer fluid etc, I found the dreaded creamy scum under the oil cap.

I know this probably means head gasket, but, is there any other (cheap and easy) possibility for the Mayo?

I still have the old coolant from the rad, and there is no oil in it.

My friend at dealer says the head gaskets hardly go on them. Wandered if anyone had any previous experience of similar?

Had that on ours a couple of years ago. because the car doesent do a lot of mileage it was down to condensation during the cold months. As long as its not a lot of the white stuff on the cap thats probably what it is. Any on the dipstick?

Hi,
Your friend is correct in the fact that these engines only very rarely suffer from a blown head gasket, if the car has,nt been used for a while it "could" be condensation has formed, I think I would use it for a while and keep an eye on it, ensure you do a few long runs during this time and check again.

He's just replied saying his one has the same. Think that has reassured me slightly.

There is no cream on the dipstick and has never had any on the oil cap until recently it has been sat for nearly a month, the condensation theory had occurred to me.

Think I'm just being paranoid. But better to be paranoid then nonchalant (think thats how it's spelt), just don't want to put it all back together if I need to take it all apart in the near future.

Can't wait to get back behind the wheel of the beast

I've never, ever heard of a head gasket leaking on a C43.

Condensation is much much more likely.

Don't panic :)

Cheers guys, Gunna box it back up and run it carefully for a bit.
