You will have seen the coverage about "tax free" bonus of £2240 to be paid to those risking their lives in combat. How generous.

However per the ARRSE forum threads, changes to Longer Service Separation Allowances and tinkering around with qualifying periods mean that whilst it is now very difficult to draw direct comparisons our lads are on the whole not happy with the net results.

Not happy at all because somebody with an existing 600 days of accumulated foreign service will now have LOST £2340 LSSA in doing the next 2x 6 month tours. In fact many serving soldiers will not even be in a break even position even after this tax free bonus.

Same day HMG offers £2500 to Foreign Prisoners to go home.

Politicians makes me want to puke

Somewhat puzzled over the title of this thread.

Is that cant as in the best way to describe those who are currently in power?

If so, wholeheartedly agree. ;)

So you are quite right: they are bunch of Cants

If this is true....I'm sure that I am not the only one to notice but this government is incredibly good at spinning the giving and even better at secretley pulling it back.

The armed forces should be treated more respectfully especially the boys and girls in the front line. Never should have gone in the first place. Every day I count my blessings no matter what a crap day I have I still don't get shot at....

Every body who reads this take out a few seconds and spare them a good thought. ;)

Mark.

Armed Forces Pay is really complex and has got more so. I know a number of serving soldiers and all of them tell me that the OR's were already really very unhappy at getting less net than a Fireman or Police Officer for being in a live war zone and being messed around by the likes of this:

http://www.ome.uk.com/downloads/2005 Thirty-Fourth Report 2005.pdf

This was supposed to make things better by targeting the allowances at those who "needed" them most to boost retention and head off a crisis. But they went from three levels of LSSA to FOURTEEN of LSA. Each level requires an extra 300 days of qualifying service!

Net result is that many short serving soldiers were and are simply going to be worse off.

Just to show there is no problem this Government cannot make worse, what exercises the guys I know is the Treasury trying to chip away at Boarding School Allowances which is going to create a huge crisis amongst those with school age families.

The people who claim this are usually middle-ranking Officers, Warrent Officers and Senior NCO's, all with irreplaceable experience. Incredible.

And now I hear that the Government is going to charter Russian helicopters because we do not have enough and some of those that are around cannot fly in desert conditions.

Cannot wait to see the Press when they work out exactly what an Mi17 Hip looks like and why the Afghan people might not be entirely happy to see them. Again.

Doesn't surprise me. It reminds me of when they brought in "pay-cut 2000" i mean "pay 2000". All they did was lower the starting wage for every rank bracket, they must be saving millions now.
