Car
55 plate LWB Sprinter and soon to be C220 AMG Sport Plus
My dad is querying me about what car he wants to go for next. He has given me 2 possibilities to look into. The question is, what is the better 4x4?? Im guessing the X5 will be around a 55 plate, and im guessing so will the ML............

ML ML ML ML ML ML..... I think it's less 'gittish'

Hello

Your comparing a petrol to a derv? wouldn't the ML320CDi be a closer bet?

The ML is at leat the latest shape the X5 last of the old..

Saying that the 3.0d in the X5 is one of the best engine for performance and mpg..

Funny enough my dads everyday car is a E320CDi estate and looked at the ML, Audi all road and now just mentioned the new X5 (with the sd engine it goes well too)

:)

hmmmmmm, Q7 could be an option buts its still a bit pricy. ML's are looking tasty but not a fan of their small wheels.
I've driven an X5 before, motorway, city and country road driving at it seemed an excellent vehicle. But im wary of the TG rating the old ML got in the TG Rankings. Is the new ML really better than the previous ML??

Hello

The new ML has come on a long way from the old one, but the same can be said about the X5, I looked at X5's before buying my ML and I had a 330ci before swapping to me the X5 was the same inside as that and a little dated?

I agree the wheels on all these generally look too small unless an expensive option has been ticked or aftermarket alloys fitted.

Dad looked at the Q7 and its big outside but not inside? weired. The new X5 doesn't look 'too' dis similar to the old one but again the dervs always get a good report.

Whats your dad got now? has he any preference for either make?

My dads nearly always had merc and the one BM he had he didn't like it so thats why I'm not sure he will actually like the new x5.

Dad has always had a Merc, his E240 and E240 Estate. Audi Q7 prices havent come down a lot, and are still relatively outside the "budget". Supposedly the rear seats for both the X5 and ML don't fold down?? Is this true?

Hello

Sorry don't know I know mine do but mines the old model. I'm sure they must?

I think if your dad likes mercs its a nice ML320Cdi for him :)

If you get a sport one I think they have 19" or 20" alloys that help fill the arches.

buy and X5 , old ML doesnt have a look in.

New ML and old X5 is a good choice.

New X5 is again better then current ML.

x5 is superb , you will not be disappointed.

I had the old ML post faclift -a 2004 model- and even that was much improved over the early ones. But the new ML is a big leap forward. The 320cdi engine is amazing; a real advance on the 320cdi I had in the S class. Smooth, gutsy and so refined you can hardly believe it is diesel. And the ride is excellent.

The old X5 is a good on-road 4x4. Good engines and nice enough finish. Not as keen on the looks as the ML but that is down to personal taste.

Rear seats do fold down in both.

Wheels: - it is not really sensible to look at wheels as a style option. Big wheels with low profile tyres increase drag, use more fuel, aquaplane more easily, spoil the ride, are useless off road, and get kerb damage easily when you are parking. Best left to boy racers IMO. Fine for Novas.

Good luck choosing.

I agree about the wheels , don't underestimate the cost of replacement tyres.

One advantage that the new X5 has is that it falls into Band F for road tax.

Old X5 - road orientated
New X5 - more road orientated

Old ML - off-road/on-road compromise
New ML - road orientated

I don't think your Dad would be dissapointed with any of them. Comes down to whether he thinks the premium for the newer models is worth it over and above the older models.
