Good Afternoon Folks,

This is my first post and also will be my first Mercedes. Im buying a e220 coupe w124 and i was wondering if there is any advice you can give me regarding this model, you know, what to look out for, what is likely to go wrong etc etc. i have been told that these cars were pretty much bullet proof and can last a long time. The car is an L reg motor and there is a fault with it, it appears that the ABS is inopperative. Where should i start. Any advice will be much appreciated.

I had XSJ 768 on my W111 220S until not so long ago .
 
ABS will automatically lock out if battery voltage low - so suspect that bettery is on it's last legs or needs a charge especially if car has not been used.

There is also a relay near battery with fuse on top that goes faulty (called OVP).

Can be re-soldered.
 
Thanks for the replys, it appears that the ABS light does not come on, and you feel the judder through the brake pedal at low speed rather than at a higher speed, also i have been told that the brakes need bleeding in a specific way and there is some type of sensor that plugs into the diff???

I will have the battery and the OVP checked as soon as poss.

Please help as i want to start enjoying this car as soon as possible.

P.s what does OVP stand for (without sounding dumb):dk:
 
OK , if the light resets when you turn the ignition off , comes on when you turn on the ignition , then goes back out after you restart the engine , and the ABS appears to be operating at low speed when you are not , in fact , skidding ; then the light comes on and the system deactivates itself at higher speeds this points to one of the three sensors - there is one sensor on each front wheel and a single one on the diff . Usually it is the wiring to the front wheel sensors which goes brittle with age and causes breakup of the signals from that sensor . The surest way to diagnose is to take the car to a specialist with a STAR diagnostic machine who can pinpoint the faulty sensor ( they are approx £115 each so not cheap to diagnose by throwing parts at the problem ) . If you can get the fixing bolts undone ( they often rust up ) then you can certainly try cleaning the sensors and blow around the reluctor rings with compressed air but odds on you will need a new sensor - it is quite a common thing given that most of these cars are 20 years or more of age now .

As already stated , low battery voltage and faulty OVP can cause malfunctions , but your symptoms do sound like a sensor fault .
