Hi all,

New member, very brief history of my Mercedes history. Owned a 2016 CLA45 shooting brake, 24K miles when purchased, did 10K mikes in 2 years of ownership and absolutely loved that car.

About 7 weeks ago, part exchanged for a 2018 E63 estate, from Mercedes dealership. After 3 weeks back with the dealer who was rectifying various issues, car came back to me on Thursday. Car was sent back to dealer later that day as at least one of the faults had not been sorted out. However, a couple of other issues appeared that I hadn’t previously noticed. One being the HUD now appears with multicoloured lines! The bigger issue for me is that there now appears to be a significant ticking/clicking noise from front left side of engine bay. Only became aware of noise as engine was on when I was outside of the car. I have attached a picture of the unit/part that the noise appears to be coming from. I would be really grateful if anyone could tell me (mechanically ignorant) what that part is, please?

Many thanks in anticipation from frustrated owner.

Apologies, should have said I’m also technologically inept. Won’t let me upload photo to thread, however, has let me add the photo as my User avatar. Makes no sense to me, thanks

Did it say that the picture was too large to upload?

The image size of the avatar is limited.

Is this the part you're asking about?

So you resized it for your avatar picture?

It would be helpful if you could mark on the image where the noise is noted to be coming from.
I didn’t need to resize the photo for the avatar picture, it just allowed me to upload the photo, thank you

So we know the part. Anybody know what it is, and does it normally click/tick?

(I suspect it does, and that all is well, or the dealer would not have handed the car back, but you never know...)

OP, for what it's worth, the M157 rattles quite a bit, though you can't hear it from inside the car; it's the secondary injectors, and quite normal. With a bit of luck, somebody will be along soon to reassure you.

Thank you E55BOF, really do appreciate your reply

A 2018 E63 is a M177 engine Dennis, not an M157.

@Max. Can't help with identifying the part that is noisy but if you are concerned ,return the car to the dealership and get it checked. You have a 2 year AMG warranty so make use of it.

AMGreed, thank you. I had the car back for approx 5 hours on Thursday, before it was returned for this and the remaining other issues. The noise is so audible at the front of the car even with the bonnet closed. Just becoming frustrated with the amount of issues with the car.

I hope you get the issue sorted Max. It must be spoiling what should be a great ownership experience.
I'd be having a word with the service manager regarding the issues and their failure to deal with them.

No sh!t, Sherlock... Yes, I know that, but I was just making the point that some engines rattle normally anyway. In my experience, AMG engines are not quiet engines.
