Hello I'm new to Mercedes and I own a Mercedes C230 W203 2007 Estate 2.5, through the Vin decoder it says my transmission is a 7g, but when I drive in manual it only got the following R N D 1 2 3 4 5 6 then goes back to D, is reverse counted as 1 gear?

When I am driving sometimes the vehicle will get stuck in gear 3, I will have to stop turn off and start again and it is fine again. I have changed the oil in the box, but I am getting an error code;

2767, 2768, both relating to component Y3/8n2

I am struggling to find the correct information or even get the correct plate for the vehicle, as a lot of information I've seen online is related to either a 5g or 7g, not a 6g.

When I call Mercedes they are unable to give me a part number or sell me the part, which has to be fitted into their workshop.

I am UK London based. I've attached screenshots from the diagnostics.

Common Causes of Getting Stuck in Gear

If your car is having trouble shifting gears, it could be due to several issues. One common cause is low transmission fluid levels. If the fluid is too low, it can cause the gears to grind or slip. Another possibility is a faulty shift solenoid. Another is your car as gone in to limp mode .Get a computer read out from Star .

No it doesn't have low fluid, as it was changed and topped up. I will have a look at star readout.

Welcome.

7th gear is the same as D, this is why it's not listed. If you want a higher gear than 6, pop it into D and it will go into 7 (if the engine rev is right).

You need to understand that this is NOT an automatic gearbox with manual mode.

Instead, it's an automatic gearbox with the ability to limit the top gear (e.g. when going downhill).

So when choosing 6th gear, the car will not necessarily stay in 6th gear, it just won't go any higher.

And there's no possibility to limit the transmission to not go above 7th gear, for obvious reasons.

Thank you for your reply, that makes sense.

So when looking for parts I can look at 7g plates.

As above your car has the 7g box which is going into limp mode and MB STAR will give you the most accurate diagnostic info. My car (the exact same model) also did this, but only very occasionally (and turning it off and on again always cleared it) so I never did anything about it!

If you don't already know, the OM272 V6 engine in this model (and several other MBs of the period) is prone to balance shaft problems. The parts were modified over time so you can tell which of three separate issues yours may get based on the engine serial no.:

Up to 2729..30 468933 - EML on, engine-out rebuild to replace the balance shaft gears (this is the biggie as it will cost than the car is worth now)
Up to 2729..30 759427 - EML on, new adjustment solenoids needed
Up to 2729..30 895140 - no EML, oil leak, new adjustment solenoids needed

Full details here:

Mine was in the second category and made it to around 120k miles without anything happening, but ...

They're also prone to issues with the variable length inlet manifold - this gets stiffer to operate over time and eventually the plastic actuator arm breaks, putting the EML on. MB only sell a complete new inlet manifold ... you can get aftermarket metal arms but you really need to remove and de-coke the manifold before fitting them. With the MOT almost due I part-exchanged mine for a W205 at this point :)

Wow a lot of information to read into and consider the facts, thank you this is really helpful.

Where in London are you so someone can recommend a Merc specialist who might be nearby

Well chances are you have a electro plate problem,if you buy new then you will need Star to programme it,or if you get your one repaired then it is just plug and play, there are a few places that will accept you plate by post and repair and send it back,if you take it to a indy they will do just that,as they have no means to run the plate and see what is going wrong unlike the repairers.

Is that an issue with the 7g box? I know it was on the 5-speed ... I had it done on my SL.
Well yes it is, in fact I have never owned a 5 speed auto box,the 7G is the one I have dealt with the electro plate is the main problem with the box unless you have one with mega miles and zero atf changes in its life, now indys are good people but I found that unless they had a ramp that they could do without for a few days then they were not that keen to do the work of course time has gone on and there are now those portable lifts and so they may well welcome electro plate jobs.
No matter what indy you use they will all do the same thing remove the electro plate and send it off to be repaired,I used ECU Testing you just log onto their website and follow the instructions turn around was a week, just about time to get the new gearbox sump bolts and filter and of course new ATF oil as it was the original part there was no coding, also ECU if they test your electro plate and find there is nothing wrong with it only charge for the testing.

Am not sure on repaired electro plate, a new one has to programmed using MB STAR diagnostics.
Has this problem with CLK around 10 years ago.
