Oooh! I loved my 325 Touring!

Trouble was, it was the most unreliable and unlucky car I've ever had. 👎

I wonder if it's something about red cars?
We've had 2.
My Cav mk3 was smacked up the rs at a roundabout and Mrs S's current Leon has a ding on all 4 corners, none of which have been self- inflicted.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d be interested to hear more - must be some tales to tell!
Oh dear...

At purchase, the vendor had disguised a huge gash in a sidewall with black silicon.

All the wheels-nuts had been torqued up with a six-foot scaffold pole.

The (then) high-end ICE was stolen twice - that was the thing back in the day...☹️

First time on my drive - lock torn out of driver's door - new skin required.

Second time in France - tailgate and passenger door windows smashed. No time to have replacements before heading home so went to Mr. Bricolage for sheet of perspex and hacksaw and fashioned replacements.

CHG went coming back from Aberdeen - had to abandon it in Dundee. :wallbash:

Forced to drive through water on flooded Edinburgh By-pass. Buggered ECU, lit up like a Christmas tree and kept stalling (it was an auto)

Got a temp fix then got rid.

Still a great car! 👍

The C124 is a paragon of virtue and reliability

In around 50 years of motoring I've never owned or driven a BMW apart from a short term loan X5 that was horrible.
I bet I'm in a minority.

Never owned a BMW either, nor a Vauxhall.

Owned a couple of Vauxhalls back in the day, HB Viva and a Cd Carlton, both very reliable, if uninteresting, but never even driven a BMW. As an aside, I used to have a clause in my will that my funeral cars were not to be Volvos, then I went and bought one…

(The reason was the C70 was the only folding hardtop convertible I could find at the time that could seat four adults without cutting them off at the knees.)

To me it’s strange to think you don’t like something that you have never tried! :)

BMWs can be quite similar to Mercedes, both luxury German brands that are obviously competing with each other in most sectors.

I’ve only owned one (years ago!) and not driven many, not likely to buy one anytime soon but that’s probably out of preference.

Isn’t it a bit like supporting a football team, or Apple vs. Android etc?

I like my 911 but I wouldn’t have a Porsche over a Mercedes for a daily driver I don’t think .

I've had both and driven loads, both in my job as car salesman and in my side hustle as an inter dealer car delivery driver....personally I think Merc make more luxurious and comfortable cars.....but as a proper, harder edged sports saloon that you can use on the odd track day then that's where BMW have the edge......IMO of course.

I had a 320i straight 6. It was very pretty and incredibly smooth, sounded great revving it through the full range. But, the quality of the car was inferior to a Ford Sierra. The interior fell a pieces, and the suspension design was extremely basic and designed for cheapness to make. But for some reason people preferred them to fords. I suppose the 3 series was the spiritual successor to the triumph dolomite. And the five series the modern day triumph 2000 or Rover 2000.

It amazing to think that the Sierra had better build quality than......well anything....wheelbarrows, shopping trollies.....grim old things. My BMW E30 and E36 models where streets ahead of the Dagenham Dustbins (my dads name for anything with a Ford logo....Dagenham built or not!!!) in quality of materials and fit/finish. No comparison IMO....

The MD of Mercedes-Benz Finance, summed it up nicely I think. BMWs are for smart people who are climbing the corporate ladder, their success written by themselves. Mercedes are for those who have achieved it. I quite like them (and indeed have owned a few) but push comes to shove, I prefer my Mercedes.

That wouldn't be me Will.
The loan X5 was a horrible thing. Loaned for 2 weeks when some fool reversed into my E55 two days after I bought it.
I never gelled with it and found it cumbersome and probably put me off those huge SUV's that clog the school run today.

But I just never had a desire to own a BMW, although the 7 series my brother in law owned was pretty smooth, his earlier W140 S class was far nicer.
I understand they make a great "drivers" car, whatever that means, but the modern models leave me pretty cold in their design, albeit they may be excellent cars. But I've never not liked the brand as such.

I've never owned, or driven a VW or Audi either.
Cue more discussion;)
