Hi Guys

What is a NOX sensor, what does it do. I have a Mercedes E class 400, i have taken it to the local indy and they told me that a NOX sensor has gone in the exhaust, the engine light is on because of this. I am going to the lake district on Friday and they assured me that it will be ok.

Thanks

There are other posts here that give you all the technical info. I can just tell you that in my experience all it does is turn on the engine management light. Mine was showing as faulty for a couple of months and I didn’t notice any difference in performance or economy. It may make a difference to a Diesel though and cause the DPF to clog early.

I had two NOx filters replaced by MB Peterborough last week. The quoted price was £1200 but after a bit of haggling with MB HQ I got them to knock off £1000! They’re a common problem so MB are reasonably keen to show goodwill if the car has always been serviced by them.

It monitors the Nitrous Oxide or summat like that. Part of the emissions management and its failure can have a knock on impact with other components.
I got rid of Nox issues by ceasing to use supermarket fuel so first thing I would do is fill up with high octane and then alternate high octane and lower octane alternately. Might not cure but will help and may just sort that warning out.

I have been driving with my nox sensor bust for 4 weeks now, no issues but luckily it's getting sorted tomorrow afternoon, looking forward to getting it fixed, for reference I've probably done around 1500 miles

Hi

Can you tell me how long it took for them to replace sensor?

They had the car for a couple of hours. The invoice doesn’t show how many hours of labour, just the labour charge of £253 + VAT. The sensors cost £364 + VAT each.

Those NoX sensors seem to be a very common issue Terry, hopefully MB will replace them free of charge. :)

Hope you enjoy your trip to the Lake District, it’s lovely.
